Qobuz Users Update?
I've been a long-time subscriber to Tidal and to Qobuz for a couple of months, and have decided to keep both.  Roon core runs on a Mac Mini and sends files to an Ayre QX-5 Twenty digital hub via ethernet; Roon bridge runs on a iMac and sends file ...
Audible Illusions 3A phonostage with Ayre KX-5 Twenty
I've talked with folks at Audible Illusions and Ayre who assure me it will be fine to take the tape output of an M3A to the input of a KX-5 Twenty.  The tape output by-passes the preamp and thus volume control, and the Ayre doesn't duplicate RIAA....
Why the fascination with subwoofers?
I had been low-passing at 40 Hz using a pair of Velodyne HGS-10s with acoustic room correction by an SMS-1 to supplement a pair of KEF Ref 1s.  With some trepidation I recently introduced a fully balanced passive Marchand 80 Hz 24 dB/octave filter...
Music in the 40-80 Hz range
schroeder, your post was needlessly contentious and without value, and "let consensus dictate what you like to hear" a non sequitur.  I wanted a fully balanced passive filter because it goes between an Ayre KX-5/20 preamp and VX-5/20 amp, but that...
Best Way to Integrate Subwoofers?
I’ve been low-passing subs at 40 Hz with 24 dB/octave slope to avoid overlap with the speakers because I didn’t want to insert an active high-pass crossover between my Ayre preamp and amp. I’m going to try a fully balanced passive high-pass crosso...
Ayre QX-5 - maximize use and wiring question.
Using the analog balanced (XLR) output from the QX-5 to the AV 7704 would seem a better choice for audio quality.  I take balanced audio from my QX-5/20 to a KX-5/20 preamp and VX-5/20 amp.  Roon running on a Mac mini is the source via ethernet.
Full Range under $5k-ish
By full range do you mean usable LF extension to 20 Hz?
Qobuz.
I'm still a free beta Qobuz user, but it integrates so well with Roon and the 96/24 sounds so good I'm sure to be a subscriber.  I plan to keep Tidal as well.
Qobuz.
Qobuz beta is running as a Roon service along with Tidal on our mac-mini.
Qobuz.
nycjlee, when you wrote that when you tried streaming Tidal and Qobuz directly to the Ayre QX-5/20 via ethernet the results were the same did you mean the sound quality was the same or that the preference for Qobuz that you observed in the previou...
KEF Reference 1 vs. Olympica 1
We have a pair of KEF Ref 1s in gloss rosewood, but when they first replaced the racing red LS50s my wife loved she was skeptical.  Now my wife agrees they are handsome, and a Decca Blu-ray of the Verdi Requiem convinced me they can do large orche...
Mac Mini as a music server
I use a Mac Mini with SSD to send files from Roon via ethernet to an Ayre QX-5 Twenty digital hub.  The interface to Roon is an iPad.  The sound quality is superb.
Has anyone added a small subwoofer to 2 channel and been thrilled with the result?
With KEF Ref 1s I'm using a pair of Velodyne HGS-10s low-passed at 40 Hz with 24 dB/octave slope by a SMS-1 bass manager that also does acoustic room correction.  The result is an excellent full-range sound.
Tube amp with KEF Reference 1
I used 20 watt Cary CAD 572 SE monoblocks to drive KEF LS50s that have a sensitivity rating of 85 dB, the same as the Ref 1s.  I thought the pairing sounded very good, with a broad and deep soundstage.  I hope to try those amps with my Ref 1s as a...
Does a ripped cd onto a digital format sound better than the cd played on the cdp
Roon sends ripped, downloaded, and Tidal files via ethernet to an Ayre QX-5/20 digital hub and I sit with an iPad selecting what I want to hear.  The sound is superb, e.g., the DSD download of "Time Out" from Acoustic Sounds seems to sound a bit b...
