Yamaha R-N803 has loudness keyed to its room calibration system, a solid 100wpc amp, streaming, a DAC, phono, WiFi, all for $750.00.
Want to setup basic home audio system
Check out the Yamaha R-N602.  It’s $599.95, with a streamer, very solid amplification, and a full set of tone controls.  Then roll up your sleeves and build a pair of Parts Express Samba speakers.  They will compete with many $1500.00 pairs for $3...
JBL 43xx va Harbeth 40.x
6119:Bypass 1.7i. Save for 3.7i. The true ribbon rules. But not clear why this is posted on thread comparing JBL and Harbeth??When I was a young audio novice we talked about the West Coast sound (JBL, Altec) vs. the New England sound (AR, KLH).  T...
Am I asking too much?
I work in a small B&M HiFi store founded 45 years ago.  Our business is ekeing out just enough to hang on.  Our customer base is ageing out...WE are ageing out!  We get more calls from widows wanting to unload their late husbands' systems than...
Speaker hiss from power amp
Another point is that 12’ is not a worrisome length for unbalanced cables. In pro audio applications there can be 50 to 100’ of cable as in the mic drops in a big concert hall. Unless you have a proven source of RFI/EMI nearby, like a broadcast to...
Does It Even Matter?
Audioengine just introduced a WiFi streamer with their 24 bit DAC module for $179.00. While not the last word, might be a step up from Logitech BT for less than a Node2i, which I use with a Mytek Liberty DAC, but that’s $1549.00 plus a coax cable.
Honest question about cartridge vs. turntable performance.
I will once again chime in with the suggestion that you explore the Well Tempered Labs line of turntables.  Speed stability, inaudible rumble, absolute tracking stability, long-term reliability...all boxes checked.  Mine is the original from 1988....
Recommendations for next headphone
Your stable of headphones and front end gear is impressive.  But I can't understand your reluctance to add an electrostatic to the mix.  Stax set the bar for electrostatic headphones and still make them.  Your budget certainly can afford you one o...
ISO McIntosh Integrated Demo Unit
McIntosh aggressively polices dealer territories, discouraging competition for out of area customers. So you really should be engaging with the dealer in your region to arrange a trial. Most will accommodate a serious inquiry by offering a demo lo...
Hearing loss and HiFi
When I was young and had healthy hearing I would say to older customers that when they go to Symphony Hall they hear the orchestra with the same hearing filter they have at home, so just listen for the same qualities of sound in speakers that they...
Need preamp recommendation
VTL 2.5 on USAM would enhance your system for under a grand.  Save up for other upgrades!  Like speakers...
Magnepan dealers
The policy referenced by the OP is being rolled out only in some areas:Boise, IdahoToledo, OhioSuffolk, VirginiaSt. Louis, MissouriElsewhere, the status quo remains.  Most "regular"dealers don't stock Maggies due to the plethora of finish options,...
Jazz vocalists which may not be as real as we think/imagine
I gotta say Jennifer Warnes’ The Hunter has some very fine music, with recorded sound to match. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris’ Tucson Sessions also, much less processed than most of their other records. And of course there’s Norah Jones, for...
Cheap/expensive or expensive/cheap?
IME, cables matter, but only so much, and always relative to their system context an environment. If actual musical verisimilitude is the goal, then one needs speakers of a size capable of pressurizing the room to give bass instruments their prope...
Speaker upgrade around 100k retail
Have you done a thorough room treatment?  If not, spend on that, then get Magnepan 30.7s or Sonus Faber Il Cremonese for well below your price ceiling. Or get some new Focals, which are also great. MBL can be stupendous.
