Redbook CD Is Not Dead
I think one reason that you appreciate the value of redbook is because you own a very good dedicated player. It's quite amazing how much is contained in the redbook format if you have a player capable of digging it out. And in my experience, that ...
Black Discus - Free Sample Alert
"Wait 'till Biggus Dickus hears of this."
Luxman PD-171 turntable
It definitely looks nice, but for $6400 + at least $1500 for a decent cartridge, there's a lot of competition. My advice is if you're buying new, you should try to buy something from a local dealer who can demo it for you and set it up for you in ...
Sony scd 777 es problems
When you say you can't afford a unit of similar quality, I assume you mean build quality? Nothing was built like those old Sonys. But for sound, I would say the new 5400 will probably surpass the 777 in all ways, and it's built pretty nice too. Th...
Amp ventilation question
I think they're talking about closed cabinets. You won't have any problem in an open rack.
Record clamps: do they really make a difference.
There are many threads discussing the pros and cons of record clamping, but I think the general wisdom is that a clamp helps eliminate some of the micro-movement of the record, resulting in a more precise sound. I would put on a well-recorded solo...
Add DAC or mod player?
IMO, the Arcam you have is a very good player and you might end up preferring it to mid-priced dacs. Unless you just want to buy used and fool around with different DACs, I wouldn't buy something I couldn't return.
Objective vs. Placebo relating to system changes
There are many people on the Linn/Naim forums that claim to be able to hear the difference between the two sides of the felt mat. All I can say is that I'm glad my hearing is not as good as theirs. Never assume that because you can't hear somethin...
Your Preference: Resolution or Fullness?
I think we all know that the question is simplistically worded and that most audiophiles seek, or claim to seek, a balance between resolution and fullness. The point I was trying to make is that so many people claim to value fullness, but when pur...
Your Preference: Resolution or Fullness?
While the majority of posters claim to favor fullness over resolution (for the most part)then why are there so many complaints of harsh systems and posts about how to tame a bright or forward sound? Unfortunately, people are seduced by systems tha...
cd player recommendation
Wow - 10 years on a CD player is something. I know that player had a following, so if you really like it, it may be worth sending it to Chris in Canada. That aside, there is so much written on the various CD players that I really don't have much t...
Primer reading for new Rogue Cronus owner?
I'm not ashamed to admit that when I bought my first tube amp I was afraid of it, like it was going to explode or something. My advice is just forget about it. People had tube TVs and tube radios in their homes for a hundred years and nobody gave ...
Audience AR 12 TS vs Tesla PowerCell 10SE Mk III
@Jazzonthehudson - I never got around to the AU24 Powerchord, but I would venture a guess that it would be a significant improvement and - 30 day money back. I'm going to do it when I have the chance. I remember the T as being quite a step up in t...
Audience AR 12 TS vs Tesla PowerCell 10SE Mk III
I can't speak to the others, but I have the AR6T and I feel it was money well spent. I used to own an AR6 and it was also excellent. Plus, Audience is a great company and stands behind its products. I don't think you could go wrong with a used AR1...
Integrated Recommendation
I really like the Mani2, but their low impedence and low efficiency will drain the sh!t out of a power amp, especially if you want to crank it up. If you listen at moderate levels, I would check out the Bada Purer 3.3. It's about 150 WPC, which I ...
