For those of us over 60..
onhwy61, I used the term "monster" literally, not in terms of him being a great drummer necessarily. For whatever reason, his drums sound kind of thin and weak on the Electric Flag album. Live, he sounded as "punchy" as Keith Moon, pounding his dr...
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
Real good point lewm, perhaps the reason linear-tracking arms are known for their great bass reproduction.
best preamps
folkfreak graciously invited me over to his place to hear his system, which includes a Ref 40. He runs it with the top cover off, so I was able to see it’s guts. That pre is a thing of beauty, a real work of art. But for me to spend 25 g’s on a pr...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
Damn wolf, I’m green with envy. Though going to shows in San Francisco frequently, I somehow managed to never see the Grape live. Same with Springfield. But the one band (heh) I most regret not seeing live are The Hawks, whom you also saw. Punk ;-) .
For those of us over 60..
Bloomfield was SO important to use suburban white brats, introducing us to genuine Blues guitar playing in The Paul Butterfield Band in 1965. I was lucky enough to see Mike, Buddy Miles (a monster drummer), and Harvey Brooks (great bass player) li...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
Buffalo Springfield and Moby Grape remind me of each other---almost too much talent for one group, both with three guitarists and singers, and multiple songwriters. Springfield’s three album are all must-owns imo, and while the Grape’s are more va...
The current best band in the world?
Not at all Steve. Another detail: while the Evan Johns Moontan album was being mixed and mastered (by Rodney Mills, who worked with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, 38 Special, etc.), a tour was being set up to support the release of the al...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
Wikipedia says Jim Gordon was a member 1971-2, Roger Hawkins (and bassist David Hood, Roger's rhythm section partner in The Swampers) 1972-3. So Jim and Roger were both playing drums in Traffic during 1972. After Roger left, Capaldi returned to th...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
Late in their history, Capaldi moved from the drum riser to the front of the stage (he was a songwriter as well as drummer), and Hawkins and Gordon were brought in to play double drums. Do a search on Google Images for pics of them on stage.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Clint Black is great, a throwback to the Honky-Tonk singers of the 1950's.

All right, anyone already sick of my long posts, you don’t want to read this, so just skip on by. This is for slaw, but may also be of interest to those wondering how many musician’s lives are lived. No Steve, my move to Portland is the combined e...
Rodney Crowell
slaw, as with Dylan, the album may be a place holder until Crowell gets over a case of writer’s block. Songwriters have it rough when the muse disappears.
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
@marko1262---Now yer takin'! The Swampers (their actual name) are my all-time favorite recording-only band (no road work), as good as it gets. Drummer Roger Hawkins is one of my three or so favorite drummers, who left the Muscle Shoal studio to wo...
The current best band in the world?
I doubt you or anyone else here has it slaw! It’s a track on a single by a guy named Ray Paul that Emitt produced and sang harmony on. The song is entitled "Some Sing, Some Dance", a 1972 song written by Canadian Michael Pagliaro. It came out in t...

@slaw---yeah, I don’t know why home studios just don’t get as good a sound as pro studios. My old friend Pete Curry (bassist in Los Straitjackets) has a studio with a 2" 3M 16-track recorder, a bunch of great mics (Sennheiser, AKG, Neumann, Electr...
