@kerrybh - your perspective seems to be in error.
- You assume a stand alone product “should” already be optimized to operate at it’s best. The truth is that most audio components are built to a cost/price point to compete in a specific market segment. Options offered for sonic improvements for additional costs is not a flaw in the original design, it simply offers utilization of better parts+performance for more money.
- You seem to “feel” like you’re missing out if you don’t purchase options. You are not missing out, you got what you paid for. If you want higher performance, that usually comes with higher costs as offered as options.
Other “Relevant” considerations:
- DACs are not created equal with different quality/performance power suppliers and internal clocks. Therefore impact of external options also varies
- Differences noise floors: sonic chain transparency, ambient noise
- Differences in hearing ability
- Differences in media quality
- Different budgets and spending priorities
Bottom line- when purchasing digital, look at your budget then look at options within your budget “including” if want an external PS and/or Master clock with additional cabling.
Personally, I dislike extra LPS or master clock boxes with spiderweb cabling so am avoiding for now.
I suggest the OP try a used/returnable master clock to scratch that curiosity itch which seems to be driving him a bit crazy.
