Is My System Toast?

The electricity in my town went out the other day for a short time. My wife was in the living room where my stereo system is. The amp is a Bel Canto eVO2i and a pair of Quad 12L2 speakers. She told me that when the power came back on that the left speaker crackled and smoked a little. When I looked, it had a constant low but discernible hum. I tried the speakers and they were dead. I switched the amp input to my CD player (which had been completely powered down) and there was no sound. Are the speakers and amp pretty much gone? Is it worth having the amp looked at for possible repair?

Does the amp still power on? It sounds like it does if you can switch the input to CD. You need another pair of speakers to confirm if both channels are still working. Replace the fuse, if it does work, just for the peace of mind of having a newer fuse.

If it is confirmed the amp is dead, what a great opportunity to upgrade, and nobody can tell you "no" :)

Like others have said, check and most likely replace the fuse in your amp. Then you’ll know how to proceed.

All the best.

I do like my furman 20 I. In the west we have many power issues and so far it has been good to me. It has an extra 60 amps in storage capicitors  for transients in big monoblocks.  There have been great suggestion above. Find another set of speakers at the salvation army and test away. I always plug my new used amps into cheap test speakers in case there is something wrong. You can use an ohm meter on the back of the speakers and look at factory specks.make sure not open or direct short. Checking and replacing the fuse is a good thing. Best of luck.

What a bummer Dude , sorry. Some good advice here. I can only say for the future I live up in the mountains of So. Az. with a small power company and we do have outages from time to time . All my gear is on strip protectors and they are completely switch off unless in use. When out of town which is frequently , the strip protectors along with most everything in the house is unplugged including the internet router which runs hot enough to cook a turkey on.
