Designer in wall wiring - worth it?
I have two dedicated outlets for my system using standard 12 gauge with short runs of about 15' to the breaker box. I used 12 gauge in this case due to the very short runs. I have recently experienced some very positive results with Audience speaker and ethernet cables, and it got me thinking it would not be crazy money to try the Audience in-wall shielded 10 gauge cable. Has anyone tried the Audience cable or other "designer" AC cabling? Did you find it to be a significant upgrade?

@zlone Yes it’s a fair price. And you can install it yourself, as you have done before. Circuit breaker is still a 20 amp... With Romex, after you get out of the panel try to keep it, (with in reason), at least 12" from other Romex cables all the way to the new wall outlet. Helps to prevent induced voltage and noise from other current carrying Romex cables onto the dedicated branch circuit wiring for your audio equipment. Aluminum MC Cable, imo, for feeding audio equipment is better than Romex, but, it’s not for a layman to install. Care must be taken when cutting and removing the metal cladding from the wires for make-up on both ends. For 10-2 solid copper for a clean cut job a hacksaw works well. For 12-2 MC cable I have a tool that cuts the aluminum clad. Also, though NEC does not require anti short bushings, They are a must, imo...I don’t care how great an electrician thinks he is. |
@zlone about 4 years ago I had an electrician run 3 dedicated lines, one for amps one for digital and one for analog, using standard 14 g wire and Furutech receptacles. I was able to remove all SMPs's from the audio lines and there is no question of the net benefits. I moved over a year ago and had the electrician run Audience Hidden Treasure with 4 dedicated lines (one for each amp). My system sounds better in the new house but it is a different room so who, knows but I sleep better at night. My electrician being smarter than me ran the 4 lines off a 50 amp box that a Hot Tub was on but not being used because I moved the Hot Tub. I had calculated the distance from a sub-panel to the target wall behind the gear when I purchased the Hidden Treasure but because the 50 amp box is on the target wall he only used a fraction of the wire I purchased. I am a hoarder but see no future use and am siting on a lot of wire. PM me if you are interested in a good deal on new unused Hidden Treasure. |
