After a while it’s just sounds.

I find myself lately listening for spectacular sounding recordings ( as per my last post regarding the Alpine Symphony.) After a while I noticed that all  I was listening for was just great sound  in my listening sessions.  And the sounds started sounding like weird noises devoid of meaning, even on my most beloved recordings.
This brings up the point of how we listen to music, and the attitude we bring to it.  If we just listen for sounds the meaning disappears, and we’re left with disjunct noises making no sense. Not very enjoyable.

Thank the heavens, after realizing this I started listening for the meaning of the music and broke out of it.
Does this happen to you?

Audphile is on to something.  Most days I find my system very satisfying.  Once in a while nothing sounds as good as it should.  Switching genres or sources doesn't help.  Either it's the mood I am in, or the signal from ear to brain.  Either way it's time to shut it down for a day or two.

The OP has a nearly infinite supply of music and a well configured system, yet he still he ain’t reached happiness.

Suggestion #1 — get your mind right boy!

Suggestion #2 — turn off your mind, relax and float downstream…

 Notice the common element?

Simple - Bad sounding Great Music is... BAD Sounding.

Until recently, old Columbia LP pressings (6-Eye, 2-Eye) sounded thin/sharp, yet very clear. The Columbia 'house sound' was harsh in the upper frequencies. It seems their particular use of the RIAA curve was deliberately skewed to 'Spectacular' end of things.

The past 6 months a new cart and some cables have somewhat tamed it.

Still it nearly ruins many great performances.

On the other hand, even unpleasant music (for me Bartok) that was well recorded & produced has something to offer.
