Thorens clutch system

The Thorens TD124 utilized a dual platter/clutch system that allows you to flip or remove a record without disengaging the main platter. Pretty clever how they did that-

Has any other manufacturer used a similar clutch system?  I’ve never seen a similar clutch anywhere else, but that certainly does not mean it’s not been done.

To all,

Before I create a general post-inquiry, do you have a recommendation for where (with contact information) to have a TD-124 refurbished (hardware, electronics, plinth)?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

@inagroove   I had my Thorens TD124 refurbished in 2019 by Jim Campbell in Royersford, PA.  He did a fantastic job on my table: motor, idler, suspension, custom cut Panzerholz tonearm board, etc. Hopefully he’s still doing these refurbs. The email address I have for him is

Good luck and keep us abreast!

@inagroove I have 2 USA recommendations- I’ve worked with both firms. 1 - STS turntable - Greg Metz; 2- Woodsong Audio- Chris. Both have been great to work with.

@inagroove—Greg Metz refurbished mine a bit over a year ago, which made it look and function as though new. If you contact him, he can give specific instructions on how to pack and send your TT. When it gets there, he will inspect it and diagnose what it needs, suggesting things that are necessary and things optional, along with an estimate of cost. He’s great to work with.
