Room treatment with acoustic panels

Based on the advice from this community and GIK Acoustics' stellar reputation, I’ve completely rethinking my room’s acoustic treatment. While there are a few Canadian companies offering stylish felt box clouds and panels, GIK stands out as a true music-first acoustics authority with unmatched expertise and incredibly responsive customer service.

​Here is what I’ve chosen for my setup:

​Ceiling: A mix of square and rectangular FlexRange Bass Trap Panels (90Hz) equipped with scatter plate technology.

​Front Wall: A combination of Amplitude Bass Trap Panels (60Hz and 100Hz) finished in a beautiful walnut.

​I have a few brown fabric samples on the way. From what I can tell, GIK's workmanship is impeccable and will complement my room's architecture beautifully. I can't wait to finally get everything set up!

For addressing very low frequency issues, their SubFreQ Bass Traps are a sight to behold!

Regarding GIK, while their efforts are good to very good, impeccable would not be how I describe them unless they’ve greatly improved in the last two years. I think they’re good value though because they do what they are supposed to do and look good enough while doing it. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I don’t believe there has been much discussion on DIY room treatments. There is so much information on-line regarding this topic. I have never measured my room but have thought about it. I’m sure companies like GIK offer great products and provide excellent customer service, but with a bit of ingenuity, I believe one can achieve fantastic results investing in a bit of time and sweat equity. 

As some have mentioned I do believe that speaker placement is the single most important decision when setting up a room. I also understand that compromises are made and not everyone can have their loudspeakers sitting six and a half feet into a room. If one is not willing to position their speaker a third of the way into the room,  positioning them a fifth of the way into the room is a good compromise. Playing around with toe-in is also critical as when things get really dialed in, a half inch of toe-in or out will make a difference. 

With the exception of six Sonex tiles and a few inexpensive Amazon tiles on the back wall, all my room treatments are DIY. Introducing each piece into the room made a change. Improvements were made with adjustments over time. I don’t think I’ve spend over $300 for any of the DIY pieces and all were done over a weekend. My treatments include a front diffuser wall, six bass traps, four Argent Room Lens clones, and another clone in the multi colored center diffuser piece.
