I picked up a pair of the 8's about a week ago. I was not looking to buy speakers, especially another bookshelf, but I came across a price I couldn't refuse. Meaning I could try them out & felt confident I could make my money back if I didn't dig it.
I have to say, I'm diggin' them. Easy listening. Big sound from a 2-way speaker. The quality of the bass for a 2-way is very good in my opinion. It's quick & detailed..you are getting all the information from a stand up bass without it smearing together. I'm running a single SVS sub at the moment while I'm still evaluating them with different equipment but for a speaker that rolls off after 50hz these are not bad at all.
I'm not in a very large room though. I haven't even played with positioning yet. I just swapped out my Fritz bookies in the living room.. 19 inches from the back of the Mofi & the wall. The 8's are at least 6 and a half feet off both sidewalls. Tweeters/Speakers about 9ft apart.. 9 feet from couch. One room issue though is that there is barely 4 feet between the seated position & the wall behind it. No treatment behind the couch.
I get big room filling sound like a tower but it's not overpowering or over energizing the room. Music sounds good & balanced anywhere in the room & adjoining rooms. The music isn't super crisp or with that hard defining edge to the notes. Not totally soft or rounded either.. it's smooth.. maybe warm-ish. It has a soft dome tweeter that's not tilted upward. They are forgiving of crap & compressed digital tracks but sound like a completely different speaker when fed quality recordings. They are detailed enough for my liking.. & while they are a little smooth sounding in my room I'm definitely not missing any information from the track. I'm not hearing new things in the music but not missing anything either.
Now I might not be explaining my experience in the best way. I'm probably giving the impression of an overly polite & laid back speaker. I guess just saying that it is very balanced with a soft dome tweeter will be an easier better description. I think that will be enough for some people to understand.
You can listen to a heavy metal track with the Mofi without wanting to turn the volume down as quick as possible. I really like the drums & bass from the Mofi. It makes my jazz tracks engaging. Because they are so balanced in sound not one thing will stick out as "wow" for some people. For me, I think it's the drums & bass players that come thru very, very well with the Mofi 8.
So overall I really like these speakers. I like the looks & size. With the grills off the baffle & concentric driver is pretty cool in my opinion. They surpassed my assumptions & matched the type of sound that I prefer. I think I would love the triple 8's. This is my one week evaluation & impressions.
