Who do you turn to when you have the envies for funk?

FYI, envies, pronounced on-vees, is a cajun term for when you have the need, wants or have to haves for something usually food or music. As I cull and play grade my vinyl collection I am not so very surprised by how much funky music has made its way into my collection and thought it would be interesting to see who others go to for their funk. My go to artist for the most part are War, The Meters, Professor Longhair, Earth Wind and Fire, Sly the Family Stone, J Geils/Peter Wolf, George Clinton, James Brown, and Curtis Mayfield for the most part. Please add yours as I am always looking to get more funk in my life. Thanks for reading. Enjoy the music

Nice one!

Saw them live a couple of times, always great shows. I am amazed that George Clinton is still alive and still touring, especially after reading Sly Stone's autobiography: the amount of hard drugs Stone and Clinton did together is mind boggling.

Watched Questlove's Earth, Wind & Fire documentary the other day on HBO: fun story in it how they opened for Parliament-Funkedelic. They received a polite reception at best but Clinton and his band blew the roof off the venue. Earth, Wind & Fire changed their sound after that.

Surprised this band hasn’t been mentioned yet -- they were very popular on the 1970’s concert scene and still active today:

Mother’s Finest

Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock could raise the roof belting out "Mickey’s Monkey", "Baby Love", "Burning Love", and some controversial songs that I can’t write the titles of lest some members report me.  They built a strong following opening up for the likes of Ted Neugent, Aerosmith, The Who, and Black Sabbath, blending Funky licks with kick-ass hard rock.

Check them out.

James Brown was mentioned before but check out his guy Maceo Parker on "Life on Planet Groove (Live)"

I think I will put it on now myself.

@allenf1963,

Not to mention MF being based out of Atlanta, GA and actually being described as  Southern Rock band with a ton of Funk. They didn't tour together but they did share the stage with The Allman Brothers from time to time. Can you even imagine that show!? To all you good folks here, I appreciate you keeping this thread going...
