@tubeguy80 OP has been around pre-Jay so I think the account is real, the story sounds a bit fake. But sometimes the weirdest things are true.
Jay's barbecue - disinvited
The barbecue is on and is all very exciting, or I should say was exciting. We had lots of fun talking about decorations around pool, inviting neighbors who live kind of far away since Jay lives in the middle of a forest. And also about food and local caterers who plan to help.
The mood was celebratory.
It was exciting visiting the most famous listening room in the country, and because I was having trouble containing my excitement I accidentally spilled an entire glass of merlot wine on a new carpet. And earlier I recommended putting a couch along the wall which would've overlapped the acoustic panels and possibly putting a few pieces of furniture in the room since space seems kind of open. It's a really large room. I sensed a mood change.
Was it the wine? Was it my taste in furniture? Was it related to my concern about types of music that that would be played at the barbecue?
It's a mystery. Things did not go well that afternoon and consequently, I will not be invited to the barbecue.
What an amazing journey and I'm sorry I will not be able to visit and experience all the incredibly expensive and wonderful audio components that will be featured. That's OK. Thank God for you tube.
for those future visitors, please let me know if he was able to get the stain out of the carpet. Maybe now he'll consider buying a couch which will hide the stain.

@thecarpathian do you think Nabokov was too obscure for this forum? Should i have tried pointing them to something more modern (albeit less well done), like Stan? https://youtu.be/gOMhN-hfMtY?si=vpdypIZ7WZDyiIJe @emergingsoul you just keep being you; I’m eager for the next chapter. |
@kirkwallace do you think Lolita would be published if it was written today? |
Yes, @audphile1 , but it would take a while, just like it did. He wrote it in 1953 and it was rejected by all major US publishers out of fear of obscenity charges. It was finally published in Paris in English in 1955 and then only in 1957 was a portion of it published in Anchor Review and then finally in 1958 Putnam published the whole novel in the US. So, today, I’d imagine it would get non-print publication somewhere and then print somewhere, before it would get print publication in the US. (Recall that it took 12 years before Ulysses was published in full in the US., having been published in Paris by Sylvia Beach 12 years prior. Interestingly to me, I assume most folks don’t view Ulysses as even mildly obscene by today’s Netflix or HBO standards.) [this might lead to a discussion of the Epstein Class, which i know some folks find a sensitive topic, so I’ll not go there.]
