Room treatment with acoustic panels

Most folks on here consider this a no-brainer as far as it being necessary but people new to the hobby may wonder if it’s worth the expense. YES!

I never used them before because I knew nothing about them. With my newly created system I figured I would give them a shot so I’ve been getting a lot of help and advice with them from GIK Acoustics.

I ordered bass traps for the corners and side walls. I also  bought the panels that go on the side walls for the "first reflection" spots and the panels that mount to the ceiling.

Not everything has arrived yet but yesterday I started placing some of the side wall panels.

Even just temporarily resting on blocks of wood while placement is finalized, the difference is extremely and immediately noticeable. Fuller, cleaner sound that makes the speakers disappear.

Boy, I can’t wait to get everything installed! If you’re new at this and think your gear already sounds good, treat the room anyways. You will love the difference.

GIK Acoustics will refund your money if you don’t. Probably something they’ve never had to worry about I’m sure.

If it is of help to anybody, here’s everything I’ve ordered from GIK:

I too used GIK for consultation and product.   I agree if the room is treated correctly then the speakers will disappear.    I currently have about 60% of the room surfaces treated.   My tips are 1) used the soffitt bass traps in the corners (I switched from the triangular traps and the difference was amazing), 2) If you have a suspended ceiling, double the tiles.  It will lower reverb time and minimize buzzes and rattles.  After you have your room treated,  Dirac Live w/Bass Control will give you the icing on the cake!

I have many products from both Vicoustic and GIK and find them similar in function. Aesthetically, I prefer Vicoustics. No matter what you choose, review the specs and ensure the frequencies are those you wish to address.

I have also used both for consultation and find Vicoustics to be more complete. I also paid for it.

I asked for the consult post hoc and minimal changes were suggested. It is reassurring to know that the internet was a great resource as well.

It's great to see others delving into room treatment and having good experiences as well. Yes, there are some variations but as long as you do SOMETHING you will have positive results.

There is also one other thing that I learned about on here that you should do BEFORE starting the room treatments. Speaker placement. This is very crucial, down to inches or less in tolerance for the best audio. The easiest way I found to achieve proper speaker placement at little cost is using The Sumiko Master Set Speaker Placement method and the XLO Test & Burn-In CD . Follow these exactly. It's easier with one person doing the listening while the other moves the speakers.

The XLO Test & Burn-In CD I bought was purchased from:

The Sumiko Master Set Speaker Placement method can be found on  many sites.

I found it at:

OP,

+1 definitely.

However for really fine tuned speaker placement... after someone moves them around for you... is real fine tuning. Listen to them for a couple months... listening to music, not the system. Then make a small change. Listen to the music for two weeks. Then move back. This last step really makes the difference.
