I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

I don’t live in Oakland. I live about 2 1/2 hours from Oakland, in the Sierra Foothills east of Sacramento. My wife and I used to drive to Oakland to attend Jazz gigs at Yoshi’s. I’m not going to try to justify my musical tastes because I don’t believe there is a rational basis for taste, whether we’re talking about music, cars, architecture, visual art, food, poetry, films, flower arrangements or sexual partners. I like what I like. I respect Tower of Power’s musicianship. I’d rather listen to Sly or Albert Collins. I respect James Brown. I’d rather listen to The Temptations , Otis Redding, Aretha or Otis Rush. I can’t explain why. Another mystery. I’ve never cared for Chicago until I heard a group of Russian studio players (Leonid and friends) perform covers of their tunes. So, did I go out and buy some Chicago albums? No. When I’m in the mood for that music I log onto YouTube and listen to the Russians. There are many factors that, in concert (pun intended), incline us in one direction or another where esthetics are involved. I don’t believe we’re even aware of some of them.

Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 (Live at Tanglewood 1970) I like the band, the group Chicago. I grew up in the Midwest. And Terry Kath was one the most underrated guitarist I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to growing up. |
