The Asgard X is very much like the 2x more expensive Schiit MJ3. I think the Asgard X sounds a little less warm.
One thing I did not mention in my post above was that the Asgard X is sort of portable within my home. Since it has a built-in DAC, very small and light weight, and it also works well streaming from a computer, I can easily take it to my backyard (with long power cord) or any other room to chill and listen to music.
If you are going to get the Asgard X, then it is a no brainer to get the new integrated Mesh DAC module for an $150. Best thing is you have a 15-day home trial period with Schiit products. I do not recall perfectly but I think my Asgard X started to sound as it does now after a few weeks of playing.
In terms of DACs, I do not think there is any company that can deliver the sonic value per dollar that Schiit DACs do.
If you want a bass monster and really a superb DAC, check out the old Yggi A2 DAC (or newer Yggi+ OG). I have had the following expensive Schiit DACs: LIM | MIB | OG | Singular. The OG and Singular were amazing DACs for my ears. I only sold the last one I had, the Singular, because I wanted DSD support.
Another Schiit product that I am high on is the Valhalla 3 OTL/OCL headphone amp. I am using it as a 2-channel preamp and not for headphones. However, the headphone amp on it is better than the Asgard X.
I have rolled the tubes on that unit and made it better than the stock tubes. It is the OTL/OCL that is the magic here. It gives a detailed sound and is tubby in a detailed way, an unusual combination. However, you will need a DAC and extra tubes, so the Asgard X is the best low-cost option. However, you have a DAC already so maybe have a demo of the Valhalla 3 OTL/OCL.
Schiit Audio: Audio Products Made in USA ($499)
BTW - I created a thread on low-cost preamps and stated how the Valhalla 3 was the best preamp I have owned.
