Reel to Reel

So I have this tug to get a reel to reel but I'm a little perplexed by pricing and how the decks and the pretty high prices don't move.  I've been keeping an eye on certain ones for a while now.  People really have patience.  lol  But is it even worth it to mess with?  I remember having a quadrophonic RTR in the 80's and wow did it sound good...rich and thick and chocolatey!  It seems like it could be fun to experience/experiment with this and hear again how it sounds esp through modern gear.  Would/Have any of you had much experience lately with RTR?  Is my memory better than the thing is actually?  lol

Well guess what I did?  I got a Tascam 1/2" 8-track for $2k.   The 38 as it's called. It had been recently calibrated and serviced.  In excellent condition.  I still do some studio recording.  I've learned that it's become a thing to track analog then transfer to a DAW.  This really intrigues me.  I'm gonna record my drums and try out the process to see how it sounds.  I gotta say again how much I appreciate everyone's feedback and comments.  ALL of them!  ;)  I bet I looked at every model mentioned.  There are so many great models it seems.  And for the record, it's all just for fun!!  He he  Thanks again, Er'body!  Esp thanks to @elliottbnewcombjr

Congrats,

I’ve never gone beyond 1/4 wide tape: 2 track stereo; 4 tracks, either 4 forward for musicians or pre-recorded 1/4" auto reverse.

8 forward, wow. Have fun with that. I looked it up, I had a 4 track forward Tascam a client gave me, I gave it to a musician friend.

Can it be altered, to 4 track or 2 track with alternate heads?

Everyone, here's what he got his hands on:

I have two Teacs (X-2000r and X-1000r) on my workbench, waiting for me to adjust the speeds/takeup tensions, one is my son's (he is using a spare 1000 I gave him), and my 2000 from my office, I still have one 2000 active in my Main system, so no pressure.

My shop's a damn mess, had a new furnace/humidifier/ac system installed, and I threw stuff hither and thither when I inherited 4,000 lps, the garage and shop have never recovered.

It is intimidating, it's been a while, but I have always succeeded, so when the going get's tough, the former tough better get going.

I remember my Mom buying me a Radio Shack one for $99 bucks ,I loved it sold it for $50 bucks about 15 years later and got a Sony.
