Disappointments

Have you ever auditioned some gear in a shop, bought it because you were thoroughly impressed, and felt it was a total letdown once you got it home?

@zavato

I have only auditioned speakers and yes for 3 Wilson Audio models.  I have never understood how people place so much value on the audition at a dealer when we all know it all comes down to our system and room.  On the flip side, I wonder how many people were fortunate to have the same or better sound when they got the gear home.  This is why I have only purchased used gear and made several wild road trips.

@dhite71 interesting how you mention Wilson Audio speakers. When I was shopping for speakers, and ended up with my Revel Studio 2’s, I also listened quite a bit to a pair of Wilson’s. I really wanted to like them, but they didn’t do it for me.

My current speakers, which I’ve owned over a decade, have proven to be more satisfying over the long haul than I could have hoped for.

zovato, I'm glad that the comments were helpful. You likely would enjoy my book, The Audiophile Laws.

The reality for me is I’ve never had a dealer that was close to offer me the opportunity. So I will claim some ignorance here….and the more I think, I do see how you could get the overall sound signature of a piece of gear at the dealer, knowing it may be different at home and require some tweaks
