Any fans of Over the Rhine?

It’s a rare day when I encounter a band/musician I’ve never heard that inspires me to buy a CD. I spend plenty of time listening to unfamiliar music but it just doesn’t happen very often that I encounter anything that really grabs me.

I stumbled onto OTR on Spotify via the "Fans Also Like" feature. I don’t even recall who I’d been listening to before them.

I find Karin Bergquist’s voice, Lindford Detweiler’s piano playing and the songwriting equally compelling. Not sure what to call this music -- somewhere between Americana and sophisticated Pop, perhaps. I read they are Christian and there are definitely some Christian themes but it’s not preachy in any way. It’s spiritual/universal rather than religious/dogmatic, for those who relate to the distinction.

Just wondering if any (other) forum members are fans. . .

They’re clearly not a band that shies away from difficult topics.

BTW, I just ordered that CD and I expect to purchase more.

I still enjoy listening to music of our youth but there’s a different sort of payoff, listening to music that springs from a more mature perspective.

I need to listen to mine again in sequence. I enjoy hearing music progression of artists.

They are very good , thank you for posting. Reminds me of Lucinda Williams and the Cowboy Junkies. Regards , Mike .

Yep. Big fan. Have been following them for years and collected several albums.. Let it fall might be my all time favourite song but there are many I love. My band even regularly covered Last Night on Earth Again. Have heard them live several times.

I discovered them in 2000. Borders Books (rip) had their album "Good Dog Bad Dog" on a listening station and I was immediately hooked. Their following album ("Films for Radio) in 2001 is my favorite, despite leaning towards electronic dance music (more like "electronic trance music"). I managed to see them on that tour (April of 2001) while visiting a friend in Portland, OR.

I'd say that most fans of bands like the Cowboy Junkies, Innocence Mission or Beth Orton would find OTR's music to be both unique and compelling.
