Do you buy used carts/needles? Is it risky?

I am new  to the turntable hobby and I have a Techniqs 1200g. Curious... does anyone ever buy used needles/carts like Hana SL MKII, for example? Is it risky? I don't want to mess up my albums but I also would like to save some money since I don't listen to vinyls everyday.

Would you buy a mint condition Dynavector XV-1s (original retail $5,600) which is a true reference MC cartridge for $1,700? How about $1,500 (after a bit of begging?) I did and it's a joy in every respect. Otherwise, this would have been unaffordable.

Just got another used Soundsmith cart - Voice ES.

Well packaged, mounted & sounds excellent.

I had a horrible experience here in 2024 where a private seller sold me a new/unused (but not sealed) Lyra Atlas cartridge stating that the original owner had passed before he could use it. After I received the cartridge, I sent it to Wally Tools for inspection with also the intention of  having it mounted on a Kuzma headshell. After a week or so, JR called me to let me know that while inspecting the cartridge, he noticed that it had a Shibata stylus and that he was not aware of the Lyra Atlas ever having other than a line contact stylus. He said he even confirmed with the Lyra distributor and concluded that this particular cartridge was not new as advertised and had been retipped. I got in touch with the seller right away and started a Paypal dispute. The seller then said that Believe Hifi in Texas had sold him the cartridge as new/unused (original owner passed before he could use) and dragged them into the dispute as well, because once Paypal refunded me the money, the seller would still be short. I got my money back for the cartridge and so did the seller from the dealer, but still had to pay around $500 for the inspection and shipping to/from and the insurance. Both the seller and dealer did not reimburse me for the inspection. I have since been wary of buying used cartridges.
