Six DAC Comparison

I am in the middle of comparing the sound of six different DACs in my system. I own them all (I know weird) but one of them is still within a trial/return timeframe.

Not to share specific comparisons today, but a couple of observations so far are that first, they all definitely sound different from each other. On one hand, they all sound pretty good and play what is fed to them without significant flaws but on the other hand there are definite sonic differences that make it easy to understand how a person might like the sound of some of them while not liking others.

Second, raises the observation that most of them must be doing something to shape the sound in the manner the designer intended since one of the DACs, a Benchmark DAC3 HGA, was described by John Atkinson of Stereophile as providing "state-of-the-art measured performance." In the review, JA closed the measurements section by writing, "All I can say is "Wow!" I have also owned the Tambaqui (not in my current comparison), which also measured well ("The Mola Mola Tambaqui offers state-of-the-digital-art measured performance." - JA). The Benchmark reminds me sonically of the Tambaqui, both of which are excellent sounding DACs.

My point is that if the Benchmark is providing "state-of-the-art measured performance," then one could reasonably presume that the other five DACs, which sound different from the Benchmark, do not share similar ’state-of-the-art" measurements and are doing something to subtly or not so subtly alter the sound. Whether a person likes what they hear is a different issue.

I havent been to a lot of shows, but anyone who can find more than 2 or 3 rooms with even marginal sound must have better hearing than I do.

@tubeguy76 My best decision in improving my modest streaming system was reading this thread and purchasing a used Mojo Mystique EVO B4B.  Just a wonderful performing and sounding DAC.  A few months ago I traded it in for one of Ben’s Mystique X ‘25 NC’s demo returns.  The upgrade did improve the sound but not in a major way.  It was more of a subtle refinement that made everything sound more alive, cleaner and real.  Was it worth the upgrade?  I feel it was but I could be very happy with the EVO as well.  You can’t go wrong with any of the Mojo DAC’s it’s just a personal spending decision how far up the line you want to go. The EVO Pro is a great  value and buying from Mojo you know it will be in great condition. Best to you with your decision.

@tksteingraber Thank you and I appreciate the mini-review.  I was looking at the Mystique Evo B4B and your personal take on it is helpful.  I'm intrigued by the Mojo products and I can tell Ben puts a lot of love into these.

I recently got the Mojo X SE. I'm running USB through 2 DDCs and it sounds excellent. Still can't help but wonder how my cleaned up USB would fare against a cleaned up AES or spdif if I were to buy a DDC for those outputs (Berkeley Alpha or Audio GD).

Does anyone have a Mojo and using a DDC with it? Or have an input preference?
