Andy Kim retipped my high-output Sumiko BPS EVO III with a boron cantilever and micro-ridge (MR) stylus. The results were fantastic. Sounded way better than the original stock cartridge. Turnaround was fast and the price was reasonable. @orenb Thanks for reminding me about Andy's modified DL-103. I've recently upgraded my record playback system I wanted to start with a stock DL-103 as a point of reference. I love the liveliness and whole organic sound of the stock cartridge, but I miss the detail and nuance of the MR-boron combination. I need to contact Mr. Kim. |

Similar, but different: I started with a Denon 103-R. The 'R' upgrade has better copper. Then, I upgraded the original Aluminum cantilever with Boron and the Conical stylus to an Elliptical one. I was experimenting. Not certain that it would be a significant improvement... but, it was. I eventually modified 4 of them. Today I use a micro-line stylus (Hana Umami Red).
Bottom line - IMO you can't go wrong upgrading a good-quality (ex. Denon 103-R) "LoFi" cartridge body, then upgrade it with a Boron cantilever and a micro-line stylus. The result will be a lot of SQ for the buck... Good luck Now, back to the music :-) |
