Haha same - my main reason for keeping gear OFF when possible is to save the tubes. That said the engineer in me does hate wastefulness without justification. 

@elliottbnewcombjr do you run Class D amplifiers? Because that saves a ton of energy. Where would you draw the line? Active preamps OK?

Graham Nash explains his inspiration for the song in his 2013 autobiography:

The origin of the song came from my recent infatuation with art. I had begun collecting photographs around that time, powerful images that had an emotional effect on me. One, in particular, was a Diane Arbus image of a boy in Central Park. It spoke volumes to me. The kid was only about nine or ten years old, but his expression bristled with intense anger. He had a plastic grenade clenched in a fist, but it seemed to me that if it were real the kid would have thrown it. The consequences it implied startled me. I thought, ‘If we don’t start teaching our kids a better way of dealing with each other, humanity will never succeed.’

Many feel the song is really about how the baby boom generation must teach their parents about the way the world should be. In fact, it’s a lesson for parents and for their children.

Oh brother. Thanks for starting my day with a serious eye roll. 

I woke up thinking about ’GAS’ Gear Acquisition Syndrome’ Cameras, Audio, Autos, Clothes ....

How much energy is involved in the entire chain, from making the beast machines that dig the raw materials, roads to those sites, feed and house the workers, transport, warehouse, lighting/heat/ac, parking lots, parking lot lighting, snow plowing, landscaping of every site involved, marketing materials, sales offices, everything needed for every location in the entire chain to get to your door. 

It’s true for everything, i.e. 30 varieties of pickles in these city sized stores all over the place. I’m horrified when I go inside one.

The problem is the end game, there’s no work for anyone.

I personally never heard class d (that I was aware of), there is a point of silliness, but opposing leaving them on makes good sense to me, especially because it is Unnecessary. 20 min warm up is plenty.

  Calling someone you don’t even know “ TRUELY DESPICABLY “ is pretty strong. I leave my DAC and streamer on 24/7. FWIT my electricity consumption last year was 13.9 megawatts. My solar system generated all my power plus and additional 2 megawatts that netted me $71 back. My power company sold that overage last summer for approximately $1K. I have tube gear and the rest of my gear stays off when not in use. Since I live in central California and we have the second highest power rate in the country next to San Diego and it is in the 100’s most of the summer I’m looking at a class D amp for the upcoming summer. I try to look for the similarities and not the differences especially on this site. Respectfully, Mike B.
