Moving Magnet Phono Cartridges

@billstevenson, somewhat similar beginning.  I got out of the Navy and returned home to finish school in 1966.  I had time that summer to order and build my first stereo.  That included Dynakit ST-70, PAS-3, and FM-3.  Speakers were AR-4 (don't remember the 4x being available then), and a Dual 1009 with Empire cartridge.  I had no electronic experience but it all went together without problems and sounded just wonderful.

Maybe because that was my first stereo but it set the standard for me.  Some later systems performed better in specific ways, but few presented the overall musical experience.

I have a 4000D something I bought a few years ago when collecting MM/MI cartridges that I've never installed.  I need to do that.

I also have two AKG phono cartridges, one of which was marketed by vdH after he modified it.  Never heard either; I think both are pre-owned or maybe the vdH version is NOS.  They did have a reputation for dropping out one channel for reasons having to do with their construction. Has anyone ever heard an AKG (apart from Raul, that is)?

Recommend Nagaoka MP-500 or MP-700.  I have the MP-500 on my VPI Prime Scout and thoroughly enjoy it.
