How Much Have You Spent On Cables Throughout The Years. I'm Shocked When I Checked.

I just checked the total cost of cables which I still own, all types of cables including spares. It's all recorded in an Excel sheet, actual price paid and not MSRP.

I'm shocked. It's a whopping sum of $22.4k. crying

I'm sure there would be people who have spent more. I have seriously overspent on cables though I still need to get another mains power cable before I call it a day, a rather costly one.

@devinplombier - “However, only an imbecile would argue that an Ethernet cable has any sonic properties whatsoever.”

For you, and others who feel the same way, there is a German forum run by Eric Giese, known as ethernet-sound.com, documenting something called a ‘drosselkabel’ or throttle/choke cable, homemade by many now, involving ferrites clamped over any ordinary ethernet cable. And yes, measured, quantified and qualified, to be currently known to reduce noise, ripple, and subsequent errors in the digital signal travelling through the ethernet cable.

Do have a care that the journey of true science has a way of turning the insults we use against ourselves.

@kevn

Ferrites are crude low-pass filters. They prevent cables from acting like antennas. They belong on laptop power cables, old VGA cables, and the like.

Audiophiles who understand how digital audio works use SFP cabling anyway.

As always, thank you for making my point.

@devinplombier - in all good faith, I’m sorry but you cannot wriggle your way out of this one through the usual prevarication - my post and the findings of Eric Giese and many others refers to the use specially on ethernet cables and not the kinds you refer to. Yes, this knowledge about ethernet cables refers to those who do understand how digital audio functions, arguably, better than most of us.

oh no, not again!

@buellrider97 @mgrif104 Thank you.

I’ve spent a lot; more than I want to calculate. Do I wish I had spent less? Of course. But, I feel overall it’s been worth it — to me. This year, I’ve changed out one IC and the speaker cables. Totally satisfied and happy with it. I’d like to swap out one or two more ICs. We’ll see. Not a top priority.

But, yeah, probably made one or two mistakes over the years (at least). Whaddya gonna do?
