I hope I made good choices with new gear. Comments?

(Subtitled: Rabbit holes can run deep)

Synergy and such. It always worries me as I don’t have time for much trial and error.

Some of this appears in a recent thread elsewhere but it was getting off topic.

This all started out by me wanting a new TV. So I bought an LG 77" C5 OLED model. Well, then I decided I might as well redo the room it’s going in so that’s almost done.

Gee, then I figured I need a new DVD player, a 4K one. I bought a Panasonic DP-UB820-K for that. It reads like it’s a pretty good unit for picture and sound. Of course with the long cable run from the TV to the rack holding the audio gear and DVD player, I would need a 30’ or so optical HDMI cable. Also long audio cables from the TV to the rack.

My main audio system is also in the same room the TV is in. It’s mostly equipment I bought 36 years ago, save for the CD players. The amps are getting old and nobody around here works on them. So I purchased a pair of Cambridge Audio Edge M monoblocks. I figured I would use my old Harmon Kardon Citation 25 preamp with them. It’s compatible and still works. Nah, I ordered a Parasound Halo JC 2BP preamplifier today. Hey, those new components have XLR inputs and outputs! I bought some Audioquest Red River XLR cables for that.

No way am I going to just plug all of this stuff into wall outlets. I bought a pair of APC BR1500MS2 uninterruptible power supplies to protect against power surges and brownouts. These do not provide enough battery power to run for any length of time but we have an emergency standby generator that kicks in in less than 10 seconds so it’s not an issue.

With all the new gear, I need someplace comfortable to sit. I found a good set of wing chairs on sale on the ’net. Also got a nice small narrow table to put between them to hold remotes and a drink. My new gear also needs a nice place to sit so I also purchased a Salamander Designs rack for it.

New and much longer SP6 speaker cables are currently on the burn-in machine at Morrow Audio.

All of this started with wanting a new TV and it just kept going, LOL! Oh well. Did I miss anything? Did I get anything that’s not going to work well together?  I did as much research as I could and it was quite a bit. Ya never know though.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated! Thank you all.

It seems that you have a well-sorted system-I'm sure it will bring you many joyful hours.

I use AI for some basic research and find that useful. I don't take take the conclusions too seriously. Consumer level AI does seemed tuned toward flattery. That likely creates false credibility because we all like affirmation. I'm shopping for a new component and have run the exact same comparisons of 6-8 components through three different AI engines, with all different results.

If you explore new speakers, as someone suggested, it might be worthwhile to attend a show if you don't have dealers to visit. That's far from ideal, but I think you can get the basic personality of speakers even at a show and that's better than buying blind. Plus, you'll have a great time.

Congrats on your new gear.

@ericrhodes1 Thank you, I’m pretty certain I’ll be extremely happy! It seems I got the synergy right, according to what I read here.

@parkergetdean LOL! Well, I can’t afford to be an addict, I don’t want to be broke when I retire! I actually spent the equivalent of my current employer’s contribution to my 401K. I didn’t touch my contributions, Etrade, savings etc. Free money in my book. Also, you are correct on your position with subs. That’s been my experience in my vehicle anyways. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s not. I keep it at the bare minimum in the vehicle.

@evanpress That is all good advice and I’ve read that on here before. Thank you for reinforcing it though. Room treatments will take some time and experimenting.

@78sman Thank you for the compliments and cable advice. Over time I will get even better cables and these will go to the secondary system. And yes, my JBL’s work great playing movies too. With monoblocks and one pair of speakers, sounds still sometimes come from behind you.

@wsrrsw I appreciate your advice. I really ought to look into a whole house surge protector. I have them all over the house and they need to be replaced every few years or so. But...what about the battery backup feature? Available with whole house protection? At what cost?

@bassbuyer You’re welcome and thank you. It is a fun journey. I don’t have everything here and hooked up yet. The preamp may take another week or two to get here. Cables and such are still coming in too. I’m sure I’ll be quite pleased when everything is all set up.

@thecarpathian Yes, absolutely correct!  I should plan on only plugging in the system when I’m ready to use it. Better safe than sorry... and miserable.

@mahler123 Thanks for the post. Yes, we must do the things in life we enjoy before we can’t enjoy them. I already have some hearing loss but it’s not major. I’m taking steps to keep it from getting worse too.

@ditusa Right on! I’ve never been disappointed by my L100t’s or my L100t3’s. They sound a little different from each other but I like them both.

@gkelly Maybe you’re position is correct, I’ll never know. The room would be too crowded with subs. My JBLs go down to 35 hz.I see a lot of today’s "full range" speakers that don’t go that low. I’m not arguing with you, just living with I can have.

@buellrider97 I appreciate the well wishes and excellent post. The bike I ride I have to pedal. I can do a 30 mile ride if I can find the time. That’s rare though. Normally it’s 10 or 15 miles, mostly weekends. I’ll get older but I’ll never get old! You should think about trading your Morrow 5’s for 6’s or better if you can. Morrow will give you 65% off the price if you trade in the ones you have. Up to you. What frustrates you with your 4313A’s????? I’m just not a big enough fan of streaming to justify the cost. Maybe someday. If somebody pointed out Bonzo’s pedal squeak while listening I might hear it. When the new stuff is all hooked up I’ll DEFINITELY play some Zep!  Wanted to see Zeppelin live but Bonzo passed before I had the chance. I have seen Page, Plant and Page and Plant together. Saw Jason Bonham last year for the second time.

@devinplombier Thanks. I was heavily inspired by my stepfather’s 55" LG OLED. The thing was on for 16 hrs a day for a couple years before he passed 3 years ago. My mom still uses it every day.

@sls883 I bought the Salamander Designs A5 Archetype with walnut shelves.

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_537A5W/Salamander-Designs-A5-Archetype-Natural-Walnut.html?tp=1295

It’s not a bad deal, I guess. I figured it out, I could have made the same thing for less than $350 but it would take time I don’t have. It’s replacing an old metal filing cabinet!

@kerrybh Thanks, I certainly researched it the best I could. I had the same experience using a few different AI’s and yes, even getting different results with the same program. That whole grain of salt thing... but it does helps some. New speakers...maybe... someday...maybe. I simply like mine. What can ya do?

Thank you everyone for taking the time to post your thoughts and comments. I truly appreciate them.

Pairing 38 year old JBL speakers with $10,000 worth of new amplification seems an odd choice.  Speakers disproportionately determine the sound you hear, speaker design has substantially evolved, and speakers just get old (i.e., crossover parts fail, surrounds disintegrate, etc.).  Honestly, I’m afraid you may have wasted a lot of $ if you don’t end up upgrading your speakers.  I would have advised you just to get an integrated amp for a couple thousand $ (or less).

@toddsyr The PSU backup units with battery backups (the batteries are 6V and easy to replace) are not robust like a whole house surge protector put in at the electrical panel(S). Typically they are used for computers as you know. They are not power conditioners like a Puritan Audio Laboratories, AudioQuest Niagara series, Shunyata Research, Furman or one of many others.

When your power goes, your standby generator is great but using with big batteries requires some special electrical hooking up. Batteries are expensive. No rebates currently available.
