While piddling around my place this Sunday morning I stumbled across a pbs documentary, Misters Rogers: It’s You I Like - and to my surprise on his show I found out he had many many musicians on his show including jazz artists. This is a show/documentary that can be shared with others no matter the age and or relationship. Many world - renowned jazz musicians visited the Neighborhood for special segments and jam sessions:
Notable Jazz Guest Appearances on the Mister Rogers Show
Wynton Marsalis (Trumpet): Visited in 1986 to play jazz versions of Neighborhood songs like "It’s You I Like".
Tony Bennett (Vocals): Visited in 1975 to perform and draw for the neighbors.
Branford Marsalis (Saxophone): Appeared alongside other members of the Marsalis family.
Eric Kloss (Saxophone): A blind jazz saxophonist who demonstrated his craft and discussed his "reading machine".
Kenny Burrell (Guitar): A legendary jazz guitarist who appeared as a musical visitor.
Mary Lou Williams (Piano): Though not appearing as frequently, she is often cited among the elite jazz talents associated with the Pittsburgh scene that fueled the show’s music.
The jazz music on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was primarily performed by a regular in-house trio, led by musical director Johnny Costa, who was known as the "White Art Tatum" for his virtuoso jazz piano style. Fred Rogers, himself a trained musician, who had a Bachelor of Arts in Music, insisted on hiring high-caliber jazz artists to ensure children were exposed to sophisticated, "real" music rather than simplified "kiddie" songs.
