Male DIN Phono Cable for Ortofon RF 297 tonearm?
I picked up a very nice Garrard 401 on a custom plinth with the Ortofon RF-297 tonearm already mounted. Everything looks great but it came with a very old and crappy looking phono cable that I thought I would replace with one of my nice silver phono cables. But I was surprised to discover the RF-298 requires a Male 5 pin DIN cable with what seems like an obsolete connection. I have had no luck finding a replacement cable that might be of higher quality and I wondered if anybody had any suggestions. Photos of the end of the tonearm and the cable it came with are attached.

Hello all,H Pinwa I have a suggestion that will facilitate any small part electronic soldering if you decide to go that route on your DIN pin project. You may already use a "Helping hand" soldering tool They are really handy when soldering on those small electronic components. There are several models available but avoid the cheapies as they don't hold the arm adjustments and tend to go off balance. Here's a link to a model similar to one that with which I've had very good results. |

Thanks - glad the suggestion worked out. SOLDER TIP When I'm soldering cable to RCA's or XLR's I find it easier to plug the connector into an unused piece of audio for soldering. It's much more stable than a vice and has an added benefit in that the RCA/XLR socket acts as a heat sink/stabiliser so if you happen to overheat the RCA plug you won't get any unwanted movement in the centre pin location. |
