Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

@acman3,

I have been listening too, in constant rotation - the entire

’Baby Face’ Willette ‎– Face To Face (1961/2019) album. Thank You.

Rick Beato - Eric Gales’ Playing Is Bonkers!

Here is an hour long sit down of my current favorite guitar slanger, Eric Gales. I think this is a fascinating read/listen. Gales even discusses some of his favorite guitar heroes of which the likes I’ve never heard of before.

So I would like to share those said guitarist and am asking if you all here on jfa world share some tasty cuts with me/us here of some examples of their work as I’m not familiar with any of them at all. And I’ll take anything you’ve got. Single song cuts, full albums, live video snip its, whatever.

He mentioned: Ted Greene, Jonathan DuBose Jr. and Emily Remler to name a few.

Here is young guitarist that was introduced to me by Rick Beato just recently.

The Matteo Mancuso Interview: The World’s Greatest Guitarist?

He hauntingly, reminds me of Django Reinhardt, with his so called Gypsy Jazz style of playing.

And this is a snip it of Eric Gales and Matteo Mancuso playing one of my favorite Jeff Beck songs.

Matteo Mancuso & Eric Gales “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” LIVE 02/18/26 Neighborhood Theatre

I know I could have and maybe even should have made a new thread but the breathe of musical knowledge on this jfa site alone by the members here within is simply unmatched by any other site or thread I know of.

Sadly, it is very difficult to find good quality live recordings/videos of this master player. Ted Greene was a renowned and highly revered teacher and author of several terrific guitar instruction books, of which "Chord Chemistry" is probably best known.

She died of an overdose. What a waste.

Thanks @stuartk

Gales also mentioned guitarist's Allan Holdsworth and Scotty Anderson...Whom also I've never heard of.

@tyray

You’re welcome. I don’t know Scotty Anderson. Holdsworth is very highly regarded. You should have no problem finding recordings by Holdsworth to explore.
