Do Preamps only Need Two Inputs in the New World?

I finally made the move into a high quality DAC - a used Denafrips Venus II 12th.  With that part finally sorted and my digital sources (DMP A6 and SMSL PL200T)  connected to it, I only use one input for my digital stream and one for my turntable.  I do still have a tuner connected but do not use it due to distance from stations.

With a great Phono Stage and a Great DAC is there a need for the added complexity.  Due to the rapid changes, I do not think that an expensive preamp or integrated with a built in DAC is a good idea.

I will have to find it and watch it now that it is in my head.

To the topic - I have no intention of replacing my Preamp any time soon.  It was just a question that came to mind since there was a day when most of the inputs were occupied.  I do not see myself collecting another analog media form and all of my digital sources will probably go through the Denafrips DAC.

I use what I would call 2.5 inputs. My streamer/DDC, CD and TV all run through my DAC. My turntable is my only analog source.

I use a Topping A70 Pro for preamp duties. It comes with only one pair of XLR inputs and one pair of single-ended. I had to add the $200 input extender because I needed just one more pair of single-ended inputs for my turntable. Being as I never use more than two inputs at any time, I would say your conjecture is correct for most audiophile’s needs in today’s world. I don’t understand the desire for FM tuners these days when there are better internet streaming stations and platforms without so much commercial nonsense. It only makes sense for the absolute cheapskates who can’t bear the idea of a $10/month streaming bill. Don’t get me started on the neuroticism of CD and R2R vs Streaming and Vinyl respectively.

BTW, the aforementioned Topping is an incredible preamp/HP amp value. In my system it outperforms units costing 12X as much. Nothing closer to a “straight wire with gain” to my ears.

My source is a streamer and cd transport, so I only use one xlr on my preamp. I am not a fan of integrating my sources.
