Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

bill - as always your most accurate source of information is Gary at CSS.

I don't know the driver models that you reference, but I do know that the CS3.6 midrange used Thiel's patented dual cone diaphragm which has its unique dynamic structure. Its dual cone stiffens the rim while reducing mass - a seeming contradiction, but true. Any other driver will have a different response profile and therefore none of the (quite complex) XO control circuitry will do what is needed. A substitute driver will work in a crude sense, but all elements of its own output plus its interactions with the woofer and tweeter will be incorrect.

Thanks Tom.

Scan-Speak, formally VIFA, say they designed this midrange driver (Scan-Speak Discovery 12W/4524G00) specifically as a replacement for the original (now extinct) P11MH01-04, the original driver in the 3.6s. I am sure you are correct about the authenticity of sound, but I am wondering how close this driver gets in terms of technical performance and, most importantly, sound reproduction.

bill - sorry for the lecture. You're on the right track. I don't know enough to advise. Let us know how it all settles out.

Tom,

Didn't think it was a lecture; I thought I did not give enough info. Thanks for your input.
