What innovative, unconventional cartridge designs can you recommend?

Most cartridges have a stylus and cantilever where the transducer (magnet, iron or coil) sits on the far end of the cantilever.  What other designs are there?

I am mindful of two designs which put the business end right on top of the stylus.  The first is the moving coil (MC) Audio Technica AT-ART1000 which places two tiny coils, each 0.9-mm diameter, with eight turns of wire directly above the stylus.  Australian price is about AUD-7000 and there apparently is a newer model, slightly less exxe. the ART1000X.  This has square coils for a bit more output, and threaded mounting holes.

A downside is that stylus replacement involves a factory maintenance program and the Australian website page describing this service does not exist.

Another design is optical, exemplified by DS Audio's range.  While these still need a stylus to trace the groove, the signal is produced by reading the intensity of light produced by a Light Emitting Diode (LED) hitting two sensors.  Between the LED and the sensors are two 'shades' mounted above the stylus which change the amount of light as the stylus vibrates.  These cartridges need a special "photo-stage" to replace the conventional phono-stage which is an additional expense.

Australian prices including photo-stages range from AUD-2,150 for the DS-E1 to the DS Master 3 at approximately AUD-40,800, which is a bit outside my price range!  Where is the sweet spot?

What other way-out designs are there?

@richardbrand It is not difficult to see on the Gon, across a few years you have been active in Threads about the Stylus on the Cartridge.

Common subjects on the Stylus is leaning about the set up geometry and weight to be used, where there is concern for the Cartridge / Groove wear and the risk of damaging a source material if the set up is incorrect.

Typically what is learnt is a Cartridge users preference for a set up, a guidance to a set up, and a reference of specialist tools to assist with achieving the most optimised set up.

Near parallel to the above will be the want to learn of how long a Stylus will last, which is typically seen through usage wear only to be 300ish hours through to 2000ish hours, of which my experiences are to suggest are totally acceptable as a period of time for optimised condition to be lost with the stylus profile.

What is learnt from these discussions is both educational and how certain info can be quite influencing, i.e, if a Cart' of a particular model is using a specific Stylus, that is becoming commonly recognised for needing a retip after 300ish hours and this is to be found as the norm, when seen across the wider available forums. The Cart' with said Stylus does lose some of the attraction, when another Cart' with a different Stylus is commonly seen reported as offering a 1000 hours as a typical report.

Discussion about Geometry and Set Up are not at the hands of the manufacturer they are the choices of the Cart's owner. How they invest in this is their choice and the rewards to be had will vary, depending on the investment given up.

Discussion about Stylus Longevity is different, as it influences choices being made. If somebody like myself who budgets on a per album replay basis for the cost of the Cart'.  I usually work close to £2 per Album, when using the typical 1000hrs as the directive, even though my rebuild Cart' in use at the current time is working towards £00.70p per replay.

If a Cart' of interest was to be one with a Stylus being discovered to be a 300ish hour as the timeline to have a Stylus profile remain optimised, will reveal itself as a £6 per Album replay Cart'. This is something I would steer away from.

Does the discussion about the Stylus Usage life of a Brands Cart' model constitute the notion that Mud is being Slung - No it does not.

When it comes to the Brands selection of the Stylus, the Purchaser has very very little influence on this they get what is the design for the particular model. ( This will usually only change, when a retip is required and if the Cart' owner chooses to have an alternate Stylus attached to the Cantilever.

When it comes to the Brands selection of the Stylus, the Stylus to be used in nearly all situations will be Hand Mounted to the Cantilever. The Purchaser has very very little influence on this, they get what as been created by the employee. More often the purchaser receives an alignment of the Stylus that is poor on all three critical axis. Less common, but occurring is the purchaser receives a mounted Stylus that is not acceptable for the alignment in at the least one of critical axis.

The Purchaser should not receive such poor workmanship for the mounting of the Stylus.

Making poor mounting of a Stylus known to a broader community is not Mud Slinging.

Cart's of all Values at some point have been discovered to have a Stylus mounting that has raised quite a few questions.

I participate on Audiogon in stops and starts with long pauses in activity. This thread makes me ask myself this. Where is Raul? This is his kind of thread. Has something happened? I am sorry if I bring up a difficult topic.

I’ve been wondering about raul, too. I very occasionally exchange emails with him, because I own one of his 3160 Phonolinepreamps. (Which contains the best SS MC phono stage I’ve ever heard.) I’ve not heard from him privately in many months. I will make an inquiry via email.

RB, are your 6M cables inserted between phono and linestage or where? I hope not between cartridge and phono. I’m in a similar pickle with my Beveridge system, as the direct drive amplifiers are incorporated into the base of each monolithic speaker. And everything else is near my listening position.

It is worth pointing out that Moving Magnet designs usually make it easy for the end-user to install a replacement stylus / cantilever assembly.

The two cartridges I originally mentioned, DS Audio optical and the Audio Technica ART 1000, are both expected to be returned to their respective factories for re-tipping, which is expensive.  Line contact styli tend to fall into the 1000-hour group, which is one reason I went for the DS003 rather than the bottom of the range cartridge.

They are between the SoulNote Equalizer and the pre-processor, and operate at line level.

Following your advice that all cartridges are inherently balanced.  I did get a cable made up for my Garrard 301 / SME tonearm that runs the same Litz conductors right through to XLR plugs.  I have not installed this cable yet.

Ironically, DS Audio in its standard configuration does not support balanced input, because two of the four available wires in a normal tonearm are re-purposed to deliver DC power to the cartridge.  But I believe developments are underway ...

Another irony is that my SoulNote does have balanced XLR inputs.  These are shared between MM and MC.  When MM is selected, the balanced input reverts to unbalanced operation.  But at least the plugs I bought will fit!  I will be able to switch between MM or MC on my Garrard and optical on my Holbo, at the push of a front-panel button.

A further irony is that my Marantz AV8800 pre-processor has one pair of balanced inputs which can be assigned to any input, except, you guessed it, phono.
