Decent speakers for mid-level AVR

Greetings,

First time poster here.  I am looking to upgrade my home theater setup with a better set of speakers.  Been doing a lot of research, worried if the speakers i am looking at are going to be able to be driven with my AVR

I have an Onkyo tx-rz50 that pushes 120 watts into two channels.  i omly have mains, a center channel and small surrounds.  Well, i do have this massive folded horn sub but it has its own amp.

Been looking used in my area.  Listned to a set of paradigm premier 85f.  Nice, but a little  bright for my liking.  There is a local with a set of Focal aria 948.  I hear gppd things about them, but also hear they are power hungry.

I dont really "rock out" much anymore, typical classic rock and 90s alternative rock se sensabilities.  and home theater of course.

Any thoughts?  trying to stay under $4k for a pair.  i know that is pretty low end for auudiophile, but what can i say... i own 7 motorcycles and only one pair of speakers.

thank you!

Thanks for the suggestion Mike, I do however have a folded horn sub with a 15" driver, so I have home theater bass covered.   I even have enough bass left over for my neighbors :)

Take a look at Tekton Pendaragon's and possibly some of their other offerings. Very good all around sound. I had the Moab's but had to give them up for something I could move across the country, otherwise I'd still have them. Phenominal soundstage and great value. Also, very effocient.

May not be a popular choice, but I like Klipsch speakers with my avr.  They are very easy to drive and can sound good with a sub if well placed.  They will definitely rock with a little power due to their high sensitivity.

Hi , I had a similar experience about 15 years ago, hopefully my ramble will help. I had a Yamaha RX1200-V receiver. Of the Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo group if I’m not mistaken the Onkyo has a little more power at a similar wattage due to increased current. On my Yamaha switching into 2 channel mode caused a loud relay click and it was more powerful in straight stereo than 7.1 mode. I purchased used speakers running JBL 4312A’s on Sound Anchor stands for the front mains, and Klipsch Heresy II’s on wooden stands for the rears. I had a new Klipsch R series center and R series 12” sub. I had an Oppo 980 then an Oppo 105. FWIT I was satisfied with the movie SQ even with  Blu-ray . However I was never satisfied with the SQ as a 2.1 system. Given the quality of todays streamers and adding a TT that SQ difference would be even more pronounced. Eventually I gave up and went 2 channel. But that’s not what you asked. From my observations of others here proper implementation of a surround system that’s a decent 2 channel system has you going in at a higher level with the processor and amps. To directly answer your question Tekton has been mentioned and I have Zu Omens and Tekton DI’s with upgrades. They can handle 300 plus watts , but can sing with 50. Your 120 watts should be adequate and I’d consider the previous suggestion of the Tekton Pendragon’s. In your position I’d definitely get a tower style speaker but you’ll need to find one that likes your Onkyo and pleases your ears. Also for considering look at SVS , Polk or maybe the MoFi 888’s. Definitely check the used market in your area. Also if you go Tekton their boxes are crude and don’t repack well. So look for a local pickup in your area as that drops the resale considerably. As mentioned above definitely try the digital correction in your unit and remember you’ll have some break in time too. Happy Hunting , Mike B.
