I don't know if I made a bad decision or not but I had the modem installed at the back of the listening room. It's a modem with wifi built in wifi. The room is about 25ft in length. I figure I can set up another router with a linear power supply or put a linear power supply on the modem and run a cat 6 around the bottom of the wall to the front of the room to the streamer. It may not be optimal but I think it should be ok for now. I will eventually have my hifi systems all on its own breaker in the breaker box.
fiber internet installation
AT&T has just brought fiber to my area. We are getting it installed tomorrow. My question is where is the best place to put the modem? I read that I should have the modem somewhere else in the house other than the hifi room and run cat 5 to the room to connect to another router with a linear power supply then into the streamer.

UK based. My full fibre terminates in the garage where it is connected by CAT5 to a firewall. Internal LAN.s then connect to a switch for my Streaming unit, Server, Wi-Fi router etc. CAT5 also runs upstairs to another switch in my office. Keep the Wi-Fi hub as high up as you can for better signal. The Wi-Fi is simply a router. DHCP is done on the Firewall. I've tested going direct CAT5 to the Streamer from a dedicated port on the firewall vs connecting to the house LAN. No difference. It is nice to have silly speeds though. Download a track from Qobuz to cache in about 2-3 seconds. By the time you've finished the first track all the playlist is in cache. You can pull the Ethernet connection on the streamer and it just keeps playing until the cache is used up. Hope this helps.

@simonb I had thought about putting the modem in the attic. I just wouldn't have easy access. I have an office in the corner of the house and in the past the wifi signal wasn't great where it was there. If I find that I am having issues with the noise I can have a tech come out and put the modem elsewhere. |
@brbrock For houses that have thick walls or have problems with the wi-fi passing through the walls It was typical to put a repeater at the bottom of the garden. The wi-fi was then reachable via the windows. Worked well with Georgian houses.
