Goldenear….recent experience and lesson learned

Against better judgment, I bought a pair of GE Triton 3+’s new from my dealer about a year and a half ago for my home theater. I went against my gut, and bought a pair of powered speakers. Of course, last week one of the amps died. The speakers are still under warranty.
Reached out to my dealer, who called GE. Apparently GE no longer has replacement amps. I can remove the amp and send it in for repair, but no replacements are available. Pretty sh-ty. Nice job Paradigm (probably old news, put Paradigm now owns GE). Never been a Paradigm fan…and this just confirms my feelings.

Should have followed my gut and bought non-powered speakers and a separate sub instead of GE, Chinese assembled junk. Lesson learned!

Just a heads up for all you GE owners if/when you have amp issues.

Prior to buying any GE speakers, call Paradigm to confirm they will have parts in the future to support your purchase.

Life is too short to bother about spare parts or gear life span...

I am 75, i dont give a damn about passive speakers versus powered one...I look at S.Q./price ratio  using optimization skill and basic...Optimization is a funnier process than just buying ...

And our own life span being unknown it makes no sense to bother about audio gear pieces life span...

I bought long ago two low cost Chinese optical convertors in case...I was worried... I was stupid because the one i used for 12 years i gave it to my son it was working well for ever and i have one as new  i no longer need for my worries about life span... I will give it to my surprised son if the one he use reach his end time smiley

With what was going in the world i am more worry by my granchildren life span state...

Yes most powered speakers have class d.when mine die I'll get the 300$ ice module from parts express and plug it in it's 1k and highly rated and used. The problem is woofers require alot of power so many manufactures re putting class d on the base so you can drive the mid and tweets with less expensive external amp  some include dsp to make them integrate better. There is always pro and con. My hegel h 30 a mono run 5kw transients so it doesn't care but most don't want to spend 49k.i bought mine used< 20k for both. There is always a compromise. Hope you get yours fixed soon as I hVe def tec and  triton golden ear.enjoy the music.

I worked for a GE dealer from 2013-16 and their amps were a frequent source of trouble then, too.  The build quality was unimpressive, disassembly a pain, and when the dealer did the repair under warranty, the in-store labor was uncompensated.  Not my favorite speakers!  That dealer also sold Paradigm…which I liked until the Play-Fi debacle.

Hmm, you’re the guy who started this thread...

Nothing worked out yet with that klipsch or fyne?

On the other hand, if you’re low on cash and low bass extension is a must, get something like a pendragon...it will get down close to the low 20s hz without a built-in powered sub.

(Probably best to stop polishing some golden-ear turd and move on...)
