Are exotic speaker cabinet materials overrated?

Seems a lot of speaker companies are coming out with new non resonant cabinet materials all the time. Wilson especially seems to be inventing a new M X V material every year. Other top speaker companies seem to be staying with MDF even when their speakers match the above mentioned speaker company prices. Do these exotic materials really contribute to a better sound or do they add an unnatural quality to the sound.

I'd be curious to hear an MDF violin or cello.

These companies that invest (develop) in these exotic cabinet materials all have one thing in common; spend more of their resources and time on this aspect of speaker development and less on drivers. They usually outsource drivers and tweak them t fit their design parameters. Focal takes the other road; they develop their own drivers and use this Focal point as the main emphasis of their designs.
