Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

Great questions.

I know Tom has a few options that are fairly cost effective to mount external crossovers. That most certainly will be the path for Thiel Renaissance.

For me Im going to reengineer the top section of the Thiel CS 7.2 with it's front slope and make an enclosure for crossovers. Is it cost effective? No. Is it something I want to do as I feel the look will not look like an afterthought. Yes, I believe so.

A full 7.2 crossover will take some space.
The crossover is only a piece of this complex puzzle. Tom has devised a series of upgrades that will yield significant sonic gains.

"Cu (copper) foil caps in Thiel’s should get even a eunuch excited".  Well happily i am not a eunuch,  but i am plenty excited.  I was one of the two guys that was at his place on Thursday.  Running vintage Krell amps,  this may have been the best sounding system i have heard in years,  if not ever.  Now it is important to realize that the room was beyond amazing as it was designed from the ground up and Duramax is a friggin genius in this area and its contribution to the incredible sound cannot be ignored.

He is working on making special plinths for the 3.7’s and i want to get a pair when they are ready.  And my friend Bob who was with me is all in on the new crossover parts.  Hang on friends, he and Tom Thiel are about to rock your world.

ronkent,

It was a great session we had listening and talking all things Thiel.

I agree the room is critical. Tom designed room and I was merely the monkey that had to learn how to use a hammer to put it all together. The style is industrial modern since we are in a manufacturing facility.

Speaker plinths are made from Pz as I wanted to address the bottom of the cabinet issue and have height adjustability to align my ear at optimal height. Tom is working on a solution for this as well.

ronkent and his friend had to tolerate higher than  than normal listening levels. I sometimes forget this when others are there but I was stressing that at higher levels the Thiels did not break up not the room become an issue. I should have informed them that was what I was doing.

Nonetheless we listened to a variety of music. I will say both gentlemen wish they brought their bass heavy cd's as the CS 7.2 can bring the thunder when asked.

Not like the CS 5i, that needs to be heard to grasp,  but the second best out of the Thiel line up.

We will have a follow up visit at some point with hopefully some revisions to the CS 7.2 and if not then the CS 5i. Also I will head to their location and have a listen.

This hobby has top shelf people in it that I've experienced. Thiel users are even more so. Salt of the earth type people.

As a further update we are waiting on the special value caps to be completed that Tom created for notch filter. Also the CU caps. When they land I will embark upon the upgrade journey and have a completely new external crossover that can be A/B to the stock. We are in search of the correct gauge coils that Jim used. All resistors and caps will be upgraded as will internal wiring that Tom designed.

Design of the CS 7.2 crossover enclosure will begin next week. I can show CAD models of it when I have it done. This will be what I do to get the xover outboard but is not what I see Thiel Renaissance doing. I’m merely providing a room with a Thiel speaker that can be heard with the work Tom has been doing. The looks of the final product iwill no doubt be different.

I'm in the performance business and that is exactly where my priorities lay. Placing second is being the first person to lose. .

Tom

Time to pull the tools out and strap a twin turbo in the CS 7.2.
