Help picking a CD player

I have been shopping for a new or used CD player that is a step or two above the standard retail offerings. I’ve already had my share of Sony ES, Pioneer Elite, Yamaha, and lower end Luxman. My favorite for sound was a Nakamichi but it kept having issues.

my search has narrowed to 4 interesting options under $1000 (Canadian), delivered to my door.

1. Used - April Music Stello CDA 500

2. Used - Roksan K3 CD DI

3. New - Creek Audio 4040

4 New - SMSL PL200 T

I would appreciate the input of the collective genius that is Audiogon!

Yes my amp (Micromega M-1 100) has a good DAC. That’s why I am leaning toward the SMSL transport. I like the idea of using a digital storage system, but my wife is kind of stuck on the physical aspect of being able to play a CD, as much as she likes when I play an album on the turntable.

The selections on your list are actually quite good, but to me, the choice is very straightforward. I’m hesitant to buy used CD players. Second, I prefer top-loading models, which narrows it down to the SMSL PL200T—especially considering its I²S, external clock connections, and external LPS options.  Home audition it to see if it lives up to the hype.  Best of luck.

Creek and Audiolab are solid.

I used to think CD players don't matter but I was wrong. Onkyo is another fantastic option. If you have a DAC, it matters less. Focus on a good DAC - such as Audiolab D7 - and and a Marantz CD player/transport and they will sing!

In addition to Creek, Audiolab and Rotel CD players already mentioned, I suggest you consider the Arcam CD5 and the Pro-Ject CD DS2 (transport only) and CD DS3 (transport plus DAC).  All should under or close to your buget.
