+1 Investigate Shunyata site. He has some great videos explaining the science behind power cords and how he first came to realize the differences they could make and why.
Diving into Power... Cable recs for my system and ears....?
Hello All,
I have been enjoying a full system upgrade over the past year... the interconnects and digital cables were an eye opener! Now I am bringing my attention to power...
I am currently running my components off a power strip that is 10' long... supposedly designed for audio. All my major components are plugged into this. This power strip is plugged into a wall outlet, which is shared with some lights etc. Also plugged into this power strip is my wifi router.
I have a few questions:
-What is the most important in regards to impact to overall sound if I were to upgrade the power cords? My guess its: 1: Amp.... 2: DAC... 3: Streamer... is that right? Or is it the opposite?
-Should I have an electrician setup a dedicated outlet to my electrical box, and run my main components off that? Is this worth it? or is there another setup between my electrical box and my components? Or if there is no detectible buzz, should I simply not bother?
-If I should begin looking into power cords as the first upgrade here, what cord would you recommend if I yearn for the following: Extreme startling presence and separation... magic midrange, highs blissful, voice acoustic jazz violin, piano... essentially startling presence as if the instrument is right there...
I have been enjoying Anticables, and they have a well rated cable in the $300 range which supposedly is as good or better than $1000 cables... but I am open to recommendations...!
Thank you all!
Richard

I’m curious too how noise was measured. @soix makes a good point about installing the new branch circuit(s) correctly. But the whole point of implementing dedicated branch circuits is improved current delivery. Some amps actually require a dedicated circuit in their users manual, but regardless it’s always a nice to have. |
Respectfully, some of those pseudoscience trash videos would be laughable if they weren't intended to deceive a credulous audience. |
@karlss0n The reason that a manufacturer would never talk about an AC cable or frankly, any cable is rational and clear… Number one they don't want to enter into that ring, number two it would imply there's something wrong with the amplifier using a Chinese cord… I hope that makes sense to you. behind the scenes, every manufacturer I know is aware of the variety of differences, but it would be insane for them to talk about it publicly |
@devinplombier thank you for the kind words… Pale emperor I agree is the best thing he’s ever done… But then again I like music with Groove and space :)
I don’t prefer the Shunyata stuff because of the videos or because of his PhD or his past experience as a military scientist… I simply have better ears than others do, and better monitoring than others do, and it’s 100% obvious that all of their AC cables have a unique quality to them, which may or may not be beneficial per cable, but all of them are better than a Chinese cord… And frankly, every Chinese cord has its own subtle flavor, even though they are incredibly similar
mean if we don’t hear these things, it doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with us. It just means that the resolution of our system isn’t there, or it means that the differences don’t affect us personally and that’s great, save your money, enjoy your music…
But every single thing has a sound, all cables and capacitors have a sound, every single thing in a chain
when we have spent every day for 30 years, criticizing out own chain, and comparing things in a treated environment, it is definitely possible to get to the bottom of the rabbit hole :)
