Review: Mad Scientist White Magic Interconnects

Allowing the full burn in to complete with my new AC power cord, then I'll remove the previous Mad Scientist's Black magic and install the new Mad Scientist White Magic Interconnects. Could there be an improvement? Not holding my breath. But I read about the new super secret material being used and read a crazy impressed review so, I had to know! Tomorrow I'm putting them in no matter what. Just want to be settled on what this new power cable has done before I move on. Curious? me too

his false claims with the regulatory facts

There's regulatory facts to do with wiring standards, and completely separately there's the operation of Consumer Law which is similar in Australia and New Zealand.

I make fair use of the Australian Consumer Law and just had a quick look at New Zealand's equivalent.

What is “acceptable quality”?

Acceptable quality means goods:

  • Do what they are made to do.
  • Are acceptable in appearance and finish.
  • Are free from minor defects.
  • Are safe and durable (i.e. last a reasonable amount of time).

It might come as a surprise, but the Australian Consumer Law is not normally fought between expensive lawyers through the Court System.  Instead, each state operates a Fair Trading department which can mediate in disputes.  If that does not work out, each state has a Tribunal which can make legally binding decisions.  No lawyers are required for a Tribunal appearance, and the cost is notional.

As an example, I had an expensive OLED TV which had a two year manufacturer's warranty.  After 6 years, it developed a vertical yellow line down the middle. Without even going to Fair Trading or the Tribunal, I was able to convince the manufacturer that a reasonable consumer would expect a TV that expensive to last more than 6 years.  In the end, I got the full purchase price back, bought the replacement model for about half the original cost and pocketed the change.

The Australian Consumer Law has provisions about deceptive and misleading conduct.

Often in a retail dispute, I find the words "well, actually, under the Australian Consumer Law you must ..." work wonders!

@richardbrand  Your post is very interesting and I wish we had similar in the USA, but we are the Land Of The Free and the Home Of The Lawyer!

UPDATE: Many several days later...according to the inclosed instructions, there would be a dull period after 12 to 24 hours. And there indeed was, but this afternoon the magic began to return. And now, 5 hours later yet, the amazing transparency and almost spooky realism is beginning again. I wondered if and when that first impression would ever return. Well, indeed it does. (I was wondering if this cable was designed to be magical for only the first day, but no, it does return and how! Beautiful, but terribly addictive. One more thing, well known CD's have stunned me at times with their abrupt "reach out and grab you" differences. Several times I've turned down the music to figure out what sound was coming from the other room only to replay to discover it was an audio illusion throwing a sound beyond the speakers seemingly so far off my ears thought that....well, you got the idea. Lets see what happens in a month? I'll check back later....

So, maybe a more effective way to describe what you hear would be to compare its sound to other cables you have.

OK, I'll take ericrhodes1 suggestion. My interconnect history includes (but is not limited to) everything Pangea, Tellurium Q Black II, and Mad Scientist Black Magic. As we all experience, each step up from the dollar plastic red and white set things got clearer. Tellurium Q really changed everything as to what was possible. But when I got the first Mad Scientist Black Magic I was once again shocked at the enhanced clarity. It was always described in terms of improved clarity etc. The leap to the Mad Scientist White Magic is truly on another plain altogether. Its not the transparency, although their's tons of that. Its more real somehow. The presentation of the music is not confined by a unifying tone. Each musical item stands independently in its own free space. It sounds disjointed but its simultaneously more engagingly musically. 3-D with holographic substance. There's such varied texture to everything. Compared to other cables I've owned....now the percussion snaps tangibly realistically in my room. I can hear a mile back into the recording. Never, with any other cable, have I had such a lifelike musical experience. Apparently my speakers, amp, DAC, transport, speaker cables, are all a lot better than I realized. This cable has allowed all my other equipment show their true quality which evidently had been hidden. A technological break through and to compare with other cords? The difference between HI-Fi and listening to the real thing. Transformative.
