Thank you, I'm fairly clueless about IPs and subnets. I thought it was strange to connect directly.

Apparently the T+A doesn't use DHCP. I connected both PC and T+A to a switch, changed the T+A IP address to be on same subnet as PC and was able to ping and connect it to the software.
I then tried the direct connection and was able to connect once, but the software hung up. I killed the process and was never able to connect again with the direct connection. Went back to both on a switch and it connects fine. O well, hopefully the switch connection will function OK.
