If there’s an audiophile exit ramp, this ain’t it…

Audiogon and the audio press, I mean. I finally have the system I was aiming for and had imagined for my future, as conjured from the cryptic pages of stereophile etc. — incredible transparency, scale, and ‘realness’ — but whenever I’m drawn to these sites/pages, as I have been for two years, I am confronted again with doubt and a vague longing for ‘perfection’ in a new purchase. I just want to enjoy the music.

Im ready for the audiophile exit ramp, and this ain’t it…

I ask my wife to always remind me why I got into this hobby when I start talking about new components. "You told me to remind you that it's music first and gear second."

So true, but It’s not your fault, it’s the stereo.

A lot of hi-fi equipment draws attention to itself. Makes it nigh impossible to hear the music.

Well said!

I'm sure others have said something similar before, (MC ?) but never so succinctly.

@redwoodaudio wrote "Of course, reading about new $50,000 speakers in Absolute Sound gives me the doubts too, since I don’t know if they’re ‘way better’ compared to mine.

I suspect the vast majority of us have at one time or another felt like this. My approach has been to build my system on a spreadsheet with my dream components that I can reasonable obtain within my budget and focus on buying them.  While waiting for them to show up used or saving the money, I don't get distracted by other components to get me over until the right one comes along.  I'm patient and try to exercise discipline.  I don't get distracted by silly tweaks that or gizmos that can wait.  Look at my rack.  It's all outdoor patio furniture.  A rack can wait.  I just bought my end-game DAC and looked every day for that unicorn component at the right used price.  My itch was scratched and I have zero desire to look for another DAC.  So, when you get what you want, you're less likely to lust after something new.   I don't compromise.

I bought my martin-logans almost 40 years ago and they're still fantastic.  Not perfect (need some more bass) but I haven't felt the need over all that time to change.

So, if you're feeling the itch and you don't have your end-game system make a list , be patient, give that list to AI and ask it to do a daily sweep for what you're looking for.

While you're patiently waiting (and it may take some time), relax and enjoy what you have.

A  disgruntlement causing Graham LS5 was the exit plan? That's the pay to play press at work, no mind blowing sound there...

No exit available. Keep looking and learning a bit longer.
