Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

tomthiel - Thank you for the info about the SS2. I already purchased it from Rob and I really just wanted you to tell me it is the best sub I can buy for the money. haha. I am a little confused about why repairing it would be an issue. If the amp theoretically failed, couldn't I just put a different amp in it and keep the drivers and cabinet? I have had sub amps repaired before and usually it is just a blown capacitor or something simple to fix. I am getting the PX05 with it so am excited to hear it in action! Thank you again!
Tom Thiel - Thank you for your response about the SS2. I'm sure I will love it too!

Jafant - Right now I have a pair of CS2.7s in natural cherry and I am using a Hegel H300. I also have a pair of CS3 and CS2.3 (with the upgraded coax). Right now the CS3 and CS2.3 are in storage but I plan on using them or gifting them eventually.
Does anyone have a pair of CS2.7 with the Thiel Smart Sub 2.2? I already have a pair of CS2.7 and am purchasing a SS2.2 from Rob. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this subwoofer and how they like it. Thanks!

I think someone was referencing the CS3s on this forum and about the bass equalizer. I have a pair of CS3 and I love them! When I purchased the CS3 they came with the bass equalizer but it quickly died on me. I purchased a brand new one from Rob and I haven't even use it yet! That is because I also bought a Thiel SS2.2 Subwoofer with the PX05 passive crossover. Buying a nice sub would be a great alternative to buying the bass equalizer. It can be tricky trying to find an amp that would allow the integration of the equalizer, especially if you have an integrated amp. In the future I am planning to purchase a preamp and a power amplifier and just stick the equalizer in between them with RCA cables. When the bass equalizer is incorporated into the system there is a noticeable increase in bass!

Hi Tom! Thanks for the info about the CS3. I will contact Rob so see if he can send me the dampening compound for my CS3 woofers. In case you are curious, I also have the CS2.4 (upgraded coax) and the CS2.7. Sadly the CS2.4 and CS2.7 are in there original boxes because I am going to move soon. Let me know when you have the updated bass equalizer for the CS3 and I would gladly purchase one from you! Thanks,

Brian

Good day, all! Happy Monday! I have a question for you all. Does anyone recommend using Sonax Rubber Protectant on rubber surrounds for your speakers? The only reason I ask is because I saw it on this video from Dynaudio:

Good Afternoon All,

I am picking up a pair of CS3.5s this Thursday in piano gloss black. How does the CS3.5 compare to the CS3? I will probably end up selling my CS3 locally in Colorado because I imagine the CS3.5 will be a considerable upgrade!

Good Morning All,

I have some information I would like to report to the group. I asked earlier about using a rubber conditioner on the rubber surrounds and this is what Rob told me:

1) I do recommend a rubber conditioner for the surrounds to your speakers, except the coax, and they are silk. For rubber surrounds I use Protectant 303.

2) I use a solder which has a high silver content. (Alpha NRG+. SAC305).

Here is a link to Aerospace 303:

Does anyone have a good amp recommendation for the Thiel CS3.5? Since it has a bass equalizer, I would like something with a tape loop function. I can purchase the Peachtreeaudio NOVA500 for $1600 and wanted to know if anyone has experience with this amp. Please let me know!

Good Afternoon All,

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative woofers for the Thiel SmartSub SS2? I need two 10" woofers that are comparable as both my woofers have gone bad. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

I am seeing a lot of chatter about upgrading the CS2.7 speakers. Can anyone send me instructions on how to do this? In particular, it looks like using the "Clarity Purity 1uf 800v capacitors" is a good upgrade? Where are these located and how would I replace what is currently on the crossover?

What is the difference between the CS2.3 and the CS2.4? I have the CS2.3 with the upgraded double magnet for the coax. Just curious. Thanks!

Happy St. Patrick’s day! Anyone have advice on what external subwoofer amplifier I could use for my SS2 subwoofer? I am basically replacing all the internals of my SS2 and just wondering if anyone else has done this because my drivers are bad and the amplifier is also having some issues. Basically keeping the cabinet because it looks nice. But replacing everything else.

Thanks everyone for the info about the SmartSub SS2. I am having a guy in Denver replace the drivers with ones that are more easily available. The amp might be going bad so I might get an external amp. I know this won’t make it a true Thiel product but I just want to find an easier way to keep this subwoofer. If anyone else has used different parts for a similar project please let me know.

I found out that my Thiel SS2 subwoofer’s amp was sending extra voltage to the drivers which caused one of them to blow. I am just going to drill a hole in the back and use an external amplifier. Does anyone have any recommendations on external subwoofer amps? Any suggestions on 500 watt drivers would also be greatly appreciated.

Hi All! I found the replacement amp for the Thiel SS2 subwoofer. Rob told me a BASH S500 would work. https://www.parts-express.com/Bash-500S-500W-Digital-Subwoofer-Amplifier-300-752?quantity=1

It isn't the same exact dimensions so I will have to make a custom ring or gasket for it to fit on the back of the sub. If anyone wants a broken SS2 amp for parts, please let me know.
