Sony SCD-1 balanced or unbalanced?

hello which sounds better unbalanced or balanced? Also could use some preamp recommendations probably tubes for the Sony SCD-1 source.

In all honesty I can not hear any difference at all! The three cables I've been able to use are NBS Statement, FIM Gold and Nordost Valhalla. In each case the signal (within brands)sounded exactly the same to me. I'm not prepared to tell wich cable I like best and for what reason, but I can say the FIM is third. I too would like to hear any thoughts on tube pre-amps. The Conrad-Johnson 16&17 are two I would like to hear about.
