Question About iFi AUDIO iSilencer+


I am familiar with USB filtering, but here is my question. I have an Auralic music streamer that connects to my computer network. The music is stored on an external USB hard drive. So, the music flows into the computer from the hard drive as it becomes accessible via the network. The iFi iSilencer + is designed to filter USB that flows out of a computer through a USB cable, on its way to the endpoint. 
It is my understanding that both USB and the iFi device are bi-directional. So, if I use the iSilencer + on an external hard drive that sends a music stream into the computer, will I notice the filtering and gain an improvement in sound quality through my streamer? Has anyone tried this type of setup?

You should use the iFi on the output of the computer. Noise via USB is coming from the computer and should be reduced before it reaches your DAC/streamer.



I’m afraid that you misunderstood my post. In my setup, there is a short USB cable from the computer to an external drive. The streamer accesses the hard drive through the network over an Ethernet connection. I have an Ethernet connection. So the digital files on the external drive travel into the computer to get to the network. This is the opposite direction from a setup where music on a computer is carried over USB directly to a streamer.

So, if I connect the iFi device to the computer's USB port, the music will pass through it from the hard drive into the computer, instead of the other way around. I'm wondering if the filtering and silencing will be picked up in my setup and give me improved sound quality.
