Left/right balance on headphones

I have partial hearing loss in one ear and need a boost there but can’t get the option on my Sony PHA-3 headphone amp when I use it with my Macbook Air. I have explored the web and found out that a left/right balance option is not easy to get with headphone amps. Love the sound through my Seinnheiser HD 800s but wish I could adjust it. Any advice? Thanks!

There are a number of software solutions that will let you not only adjust the balance, but also equalize the channels. So for instance, if you have loss in the midrange, you could boost that on one side. 

Google for "Macbook" and "music" and "equalizer"

By the way, have you seen the OS X sound settings under System Preferences?

Yes. That is where I got a message that output on the device is not supported. The little slider that appears for balance when I plug in the phones directly disappears and the message pops up.
