Help me understand John Coltrane .... seriously.

Hi Everyone,
Listen I have a favor to ask, and those of you better educated in Jazz can help me.

I always have a tough time listening to John Coltrane. It's like he's talking a different language.
Can any of you point me to recordings I should listen to on Tidal or Quboz or whatever that set me up to better appreciate the man?

Thank you for the musical education.

Best,

E

Absolutely!  Big fan of Ornette Coleman. I would like to think that most of us have sat in that parked spot lamenting over artist/track.

Nice post- precisely. (2) distinct periods for JC- the drug addiction years and post addiction years.  Brilliance,  during both periods no question about it.

Happy Listening!
On the flipside, JC,  was never afraid to stretch out. This aspect of his genius can present a complexity in appreciation. Agreed, allow the music to come to you.

Makes perfect sense. JC was not afraid to charter different territories.
Quite unique and/or avant garde at various stages during his short lifetime on Earth.

Right On! MD quickly divided his fans with Bitches Brew. We were expecting more Bop/Hard Bop instead of electric/fusion elements.

Coltrane and Davis were very much ahead of their time to report the least. In their respective lifetimes, both were students of past events, that shaped Modal music.

2nd Note;

as above, "A Love Supreme" is not for the beginner- far too advanced in depth and nature. One has to work his way up to this release from JC debut album, IMO.

The Coltrane catalog is wide and vast in depth.  The best place to start is Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"(1959).  This album is an excellent gateway into the world of John Coltrane. After this session, which is A-List all of the way, JC released his debut- Giant Steps(1960).
Digest in small doses and have fun!
