Capacitors for Audio Research Reference 5se
FWIW I have had some experience with re-capping an ARC SP-15.  There are "better" caps out there than ARC used, but the reason ARC used the caps they did was to achieve a particular voicing.  Because the Ref 5SE is a spectacular preamp, and IMO so...
Does it bother you when you see inflated MSRP’s for used gear on AG?
What bothers me is the insane MSRP that gets put on an item so the dealer can "discount" you 20 or 30% so you feel like you got a deal. For example an ARC Ref 750 MSRP is a cool $84,000 plus tax. Are they insane? Have you ever looked inside one of...
Preamp vs DAC vs Streamer
My experience with the PS Audio's Bridge II card was negative. I complained to PS Audio about it dropping connections and sounding lousy and they talked me into an Air Lens which was night and day different than the Bridge II card.  I love their D...
Experiences With Costly Balanced XLR Interconnects Above $3,000
Here's where I call BS:  If a top line Amp manufacturer (Let's day $50,000 plus) isn't using the snake oil cables why should I?  I  bought the kick ass amp why do I need to upgrade BS external components? Didn't Dan or Mark or Bill include the bes...
Does it bother you when you see inflated MSRP’s for used gear on AG?
This is a tough question. In short it depends on whether you are a buyer or a seller. As a seller I price my component high- hoping for the "Greater Fool"  In short people with money here not the greater fool.  As a buyer I think an honest meeti...
Tung-Sol kt170 tube started glowing brighter
I'm pretty sure you are seeing an event called "Red Plating" which is the tube overheating. There are a few causes- and finding them can be a mystery.  The tube could be shorting (doubtful given what you've described) The bias is certainly off. ...
What news in 2023 struck you?
The ARC implosion surprised me. They dominated the ten figure market for decades. McIntosh couldn't make them profitable, nor could an insider angel investor who also lost is arse. Now the company can't seem to put out anything new or exciting. Me...
She loves me she loves me not!
For me my Bryston Model Ts sound better with their cloths off. I put the bases and the grills in the OEM shipping boxes and stashed them in the basement.  Additionally I really like seeing the woofers moving when the volume is cranked. It's fun t...
Any other Pipe And Slippers Audiophiles out there?
What a great post!  I always wanted a real velvet smoking jacket.  One of my greatest enjoyments is to mix up a lovely Boulevardier on the rocks (Woodford, VYA vermouth and a splash of Campari) sit by the fire and enjoy my rig. I do smoke a fine ...
DAC as pre amp
For me swapping in a quality Dac into my Audio Research pre and power amp rig was my first step to going pre-ampless. Next my friend talked me into selling him my ARC SP 15. Now I am DAC connected by XLRs to my ARC power amp and loving it. To me t...
Music Server Help
For me the DAC/Server thig is a matter of budgeting to Moors Law.  My hypothesis  is that Moors Lew applies to digital stereo too and as such products will both double in value and halve in price every 18 months,  For my age/ears/budget I bought ...
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HATE FOR THE HIGH END GEAR ON AUDIO GEAR?
It's the first deadly sin: Pride. "I'm better than you so how can you have anything better than I have?' Clearly you cannot, therefore do not.  Greed:  "I want what's mine- even if you think it's yours"  Lying: to themselves and others about wha...
I Cried Today
God bless you for your kindness and tender heart toward your fellow man.
New DAC with streamer
I have a PS Audio DSD Mk1 and ditched the card for a separate PS Audi AirLens Streamer. Night and day difference.  The card was a pain in the arse- dropping signal and needing to be rebooted all the time. Plus the sound sucked on almost all music....
My High End Audio Gear As A Long Term Investment!!!
Audio gear is not a good investment financially. It depreciates. Rapidly in many cases. No matter how much I love a piece (I'm an ARC fanboy) the used ones go down in value each year- and why shouldn't they? Caps wear out. tubes fail, pots get wor...
