Considerations when buying older CD player
Another possibility is a good multi-disc player with a DAC dedicated to the 2 ch function. Oppo BDP-95 and 105 come to mind. There are both new and newer units on the market and good tech support to boot. You have to be the judge of SQ but to my e...
Used Floor Standers for around $1k
Klipsch Cornwall would be excellent.
Which Turntable??
I like pro-ject tables but I would avoid the USB models. The phono preamp is unreliable. Mine c***ed out shortly after the warranty expired and my dealer told me this is not unusual. If/when that happens, the table is useless unless you know someo...
Maximizing My Turntable Experience - input reqeust
The 2M Red is a very good cart and the TT you purchased is one of the better entry levels. The Red is not a superstar, but good. I started out one level below the Red (sticking my my big toe back in the vinyl arena)and upgraded to it. One of the b...
vintage versus modern speakers
If you like a horn loaded speaker, and are willing to change out old cross overs, etc., vintage Klipschorns, Cornwalls and Heresy from Klipsch sound great. Many folks seek them out and prefer them to more recent offerings from other manufacturers....
Effective ways to upgrade a Music Hall MMF 2.2
The most effective way to upgrade most tables, including ones in the price range of the 2.2, is to upgrade the cartridge. Take a look at your table in the Needle Doctor website and yu will find some upgrade recommendations. I recently upgraded my ...
Need a New CD Player
Can't address Yamaha, but the Marantz CD6005 is characteristic of the Marantz "house" sound ... neutral to warm. Good value, too. Good luck.
Need a New CD Player
I just picked up the 6005 as a demo from Music Direct and replaced my 5003. It's far more detailed, better on vocals, much more overall clarity, etc. Can't compare it to the 5004. Good value for the price.
5 Favorite Concerts
Hard to choose, but 5 of the top ones include the Stones, The Who (early 70's), Mississippi River Festival (early 70's Rock 'n Roll revival including Chuck Berry & Jerry Lee Lewis), Richie Havens (2X) and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell (D...
Greatest song titles..
"Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" ... Louden Wainwright III.
Your favorite musical non fatiguing speakers?
Musical = Live music. To me, the most musical are those which reproduce the sound of live music. Pretty subjective, I guess. I don't worry too much about listener fatigue because (again for me) there are lots of supposedly high end speakers which ...
Audiophile newbie
You can spend a fortune to get good sound but you don't HAVE to spend a fortune to get good sound. Set up a budget, then find speakers you really like after auditioning. THEN find a good integrated amp (new or used), a moderately priced turntable ...
Pro-Ject turntables
I agree with the other responses with one caveat ... stay away from the USB option. They have a built-in phono pre-amp which is unreliable beyond the warranty period and cannot easily be by-passed.
Suggestions for speakers for my setup
Unless you have a problem with horn loaded speakers, perhaps take a look at the top of the Klipsch reference line or Heritage line. A used pair of KLF-30's (not made anymore) is also a great choice, esp for HT. Great dynamics in any of these and m...
Can Highend IC improve equipment downstream??
I've had some improvements with cable upgrades, but nothing like source component and speaker upgrades. IMO a point of diminishing returns on cable upgrades is reached rather quickly. So much snake oil out there, and expensive to boot.
