Am I wasting money on the theory of Bi-amping?
I experimented with bi-amping Magnapan 1'6's with two Arcam Alpha 10's. I really couldn't hear a difference. I went the next step and added a Bryston 10B active crossover removing the passive crossovers with a custom speaker terminal. Huge differe...
Does Bi-amping really make a difference in sound?
I have tried both passive and active bi-amping with Magnepan 1.6's. It was an experiment to learn more about audio. It took several months of research, over a year of shopping for another amp and electronic crossover at the right price just to giv...
Active Crossovers - What really works?
"What really works"? All I can speak to is my setup. I removed the passive crossovers from MG 1.6's, rewired them with new terminals, and inserted a Bryston 10B between the pre and two stereo amps.Pro - Everything musical improved dramatically. I ...
New Magnepan 1.7
Ben,Can't speak directly to the 1.7's as I have not heard them. But I can speak from my experience with 1.6's I have had for 8 years.Break in - very long. At least a month of almost 24/7 at various levels. Accoustic and Female vocals - play very n...
Crossovers, why so few options?
Eldartford,Nice to talk to you again. You're correct about Maggies and the assymetrical slopes and frequencies. The Bryston gives just enough adjustability to pretty closely match the stock settings and experiment a little with different combinati...
Crossovers, why so few options?
AP,It is still a modest system, and not "perfect" by any stretch, but it is amazing the difference going active made. More control, more transparency, more headroom for the little amps. You said one thing that I think especially pertains to Magnepa...
Crossovers, why so few options?
Rrolack,Another alternative is the Bryston 10B sub. It has fairly flexible xo frequency and slope settings. Maybe a little expensive for a sub crossover, but a very solid and good sounding piece (I use the full range version). By adding a crossove...
Arcam fmj cd23 vs cd33
2nd the apology for the hijack.Glad you are enjoying your "new" player.Jim S.
Arcam fmj cd23 vs cd33
John,Points well made. I don't have a great interest in true HT (yet) and didn't consider it in that context. I wonder if Arcam was having a hard time getting "mainstream" HT folks to buy into the more complex multi box set-up? I remember reading ...
Arcam fmj cd23 vs cd33
John,"see your Arcam dealer for a demonstration of the latest model".The change is sad. I have had the little Alpha 10 amps and an Alpha 10 integrated, along with the players, for almost ten years. Arcam and the local dealer have supported them we...
Arcam fmj cd23 vs cd33
Ihcho,No, I haven't heard of a ring DAC going bad, but I don't personally know a lot of people with that player."I wonder how many people would care about fixing a DAC when it goes wrong in a CD player".Good point. I like the cd23 and alpha9 playe...
Arcam fmj cd23 vs cd33
I own the cd23, an Alpha 9, and auditioned the cd33 when it came out. I liked the 23 and Alpha 9 better and still have them. The HDCD is handy also. But beware, if the 23's DAC goes out, you may not be able to get a replacement. You can e-mail Arca...
Last song on most LP's pressed with compression
Edison had it right with rolls (i.e. constant velocity) and linear tracking arms. Now, how the devil do you press a vinyl roll? Can't without a parting line. Each roll has to be individually cut.Back to the future anyone? :>)
binding post break in
Chrissain,It sounds like you took great care but, could one of the soldered connections to the binding posts be a cold solder joint? Your process description seems to leave a little room for the possibility.Jim S.
Best and Worst Rock Concert Moments
One of the best moments - Eddaytona reminded me of the first time I got to see INXS. Men at Work were popular and touring. Went to their packed show at Bogarts in Cinti. and had a great time with my wife to be, and her husband at the time.Couple o...
